PREFACE. THE following Exercises are submitted to the student in the hope that they may be of use both in assisting him to understand those propositions with which he must subsequently become familiar, and in enabling him to solve problems for himself by means of the Examples which have been given throughout, and to which hints have been added which the Author trusts will be found judicious. The only works on the subject with which the Author is acquainted treat so much of Modern and so little of Ancient Geometry, that he has reason to hope the present one will not be superfluous. Many of the proofs which have been adopted are original, though those usually given have not been departed from except when the change was considered to be an advantage. The pupil is advised first to try those propositions which have been worked out in full, before he reads their solutions, for even should he fail to obtain a solution his time will not have been wasted.
