For Peace.

O LORD, from whom alone all holy desires, all just counsels, and all good works do proceed: Give unto thy servants that peace which the world can not give; that our hearts may be inclined to obey thy commandments, and that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness, through thy merciful deliverance and protection. Amen. For Thanksgiving Day.

O LORD, Giver of all good and Fountain of mercies, in whom are all the springs of our life: All glory, thanks, and praise be unto Thee for thine eternal and overflowing goodness; for thy faithfulness, which is from one generation to another; for thy mercies, which are new every morning and more than we can number; for seed-time and harvest; for summer and winter; for childhood and age; for health and reason; for food, clothing, and shelter; for thy fatherly care over us in sickness and in health, in joy and in sorrow, in life and in death; for friends, and kindred, and kind benefactors; for home and country; for thy Church and for thy Holy Word; yea, Lord, for that there is nothing for which we may not bless and give thanks unto Thee: and therefore do we lift up our hands in the sanctuary, and call upon thy Name, and pay our vows in the presence of all thy people, confessing that Thou art good to all and that thy tender mercies are over all thy works. Amen.

For Christmas.

O LORD JESUS CHRIST, our Redeemer and Saviour, who in thine infinite mercy wast pleased to take upon Thee our fallen nature, and to be born into the world: Grant, we beseech Thee, so to be born spiritually in each one of us, that heavenly peace and good will may descend into our hearts, and reign therein forever. Amen.

For Easter.

O LORD our Redeemer, who didst bow the heavens and come down for our salvation, and who hast overcome death and opened unto us the gates of everlasting life; mercifully grant that a resurrection from all spiritual death may be wrought in us, whereby we may be raised up into communion with Thee, and dwell evermore in thy presence, who livest and reignest, the only GOD of heaven and earth, forever. Amen.

¶ For Ascension.

GRANT, we beseech Thee, O LORD, that as we believe Thee in thy glorified Humanity to have ascended into the heavens, so may we in heart and mind thither ascend, and with Thee continually dwell, who livest and reignest, the only GOD of heaven and earth, forever. Amen.

For the Holy Spirit.

O LORD JESUS CHRIST, who, through the glorification of thy Humanity, didst send down thy Holy Spirit to be the light of our life and the inspiration of our hearts; grant that we may so receive this precious gift, that we may bring forth fruit, and that our fruit may remain. In our trials and temptations, leave us not comfortless, but make thy presence so known and felt, that thy joy may be in us and that our joy may be full. Amen.

In Preparation for the Holy Supper.

HAVE mercy upon us, O GOD, according to thy loving-kindness; according to the multitude of thy tender mercies, blot out our transgressions. For we acknowledge our transgressions, and our sins are ever before us. We confess that we have sinned against Thee, in thought, word, and deed, and are not worthy to be called thy children. But Thou, O LORD, art good, and ready to forgive, and plenteous in mercy to all them that call upon Thee. To the broken in heart Thou hast promised to be near, and to save such as be of a contrite spirit. Grant us a spirit of sincere contrition, that, searching our hearts by the light of thy truth, we may be enabled to see and acknowledge our evils, and to shun them as sins against Thee. And may we be thus delivered, O LORD, from all idolatry of self and the world, from all pride and self-will, from all prejudice, blindness, and hardness of heart, from covetousness and ambition, from all feelings of animosity and resentment, and contempt for those whom we dislike. And give us that sense of our own weakness, which compels us to seek help from Thee, that we may be thus led to look for strength and support to those means which Thou hast provided. And by such sincere repentance and humility, may we be prepared, O LORD, for thy Holy Supper, that our hearts may be opened to receive of thy Divine Body and Blood, and that we may be brought thereby not only into thy presence, but into that conjunction with Thee which is cternal life. Amen.

Prayers for the Close of Worship.

GRANT, we beseech Thee, O LORD our GOD, that the words which we have heard this day may, through thy grace, be so engrafted in our hearts, that they may bring forth in us the fruits of righteousness, to the salvation cf our souls, the edification of thy church, and the honor and glory of thy holy name. Amen.

O LORD, our Heavenly Father, impress upon our minds the truths of thy Word: open our eyes to behold the wonders of thy law shed abroad thy love in our hearts, and enable us to do thy will. Continue unto us thy favor, which is life, and thy lovingkindness, which is better than life. Guide us by thy counsel, and receive us at last into thy presence. Amen.

DIRECT us, O LORD, in all our doings with thy most gracious favor, and further us with thy continual help; that in all our works begun, continued, and ended in Thee, we may glorify thy holy name, and finally, by thy mercy, obtain everlasting life. Amen.

ALMIGHTY FATHER, the Fountain of all wisdom, who knowest our necessities before we ask, and our ignorance in asking: We beseech Thee to have compassion upon our infirmities; and those things which, for our unworthiness, we dare not, and for our blindness, we can not ask, vouchsafe, O LORD, to give us, for thine own mercy's sake. Amen.

O LORD our GOD, who hast given us grace with one accord to make our common supplications unto Thee, and hast promised that where two or three are gathered together in thy Name, Thou wilt be in the midst of them to grant their requests: Fulfill now, O LORD, the petitions of thy servants, as may be most profitable for them, granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

LESSON I.

PSALM XXV.

TO Thee, O JEHOVAH, do I lift up my soul:
O my God, I trust in Thee:

Let me not be ashamed:

Let not mine enemies triumph over me.

Yea, let none that wait on Thee be ashamed:

Let them be ashamed who transgress without a cause.

Show me thy ways, O JEHOVAH ;

Teach Thou me thy paths.

Lead me in thy truth, and teach me :

For Thou art the God of my salvation; on Thee do I wait all the

day.

Remember, O JEHOVAH, thy tender mercies and thy loving-kindnesses;

For they are from everlasting.

Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: According to thy mercy remember Thou me, for thy goodness' sake, O JEHOVAH.

Good and upright is JEHOVAH :

Therefore will He teach sinners in the way.

The meek will He guide in judgment:

And the meek will He teach his way.

All the paths of JEHOVAH are mercy and truth to those that keep his covenant and his testimonies.

For thy name's sake, O JEHOVAH, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.

What man is he that feareth JEHOVAH ?

Him shall He teach in the way that He shall choose.

His soul shall dwell in good;

And his seed shall inherit the earth.

The secret of JEHOVAH is with them that fear Him;
And his covenant, to give them knowledge.

Mine eyes are ever toward JEHOVAH ;
For He shall pluck my feet out of the net.

Turn Thee unto me, and have mercy upon me;
For I am desolate and afflicted.

The troubles of my heart are enlarged :

O bring Thou me out of my distresses.

Look upon mine affliction and my pain;
And forgive all my sins.

Consider mine enemies; for they are many;
And they hate me with cruel hatred.

O keep my soul, and deliver me :

Let me not be ashamed, for I put my trust in Thee.

Let integrity and uprightness preserve me, for I wait on Thee. Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.

PSALM XXIII.

JEI shall not want.

EHOVAH is my Shepherd;

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

He leadeth me beside the still waters.

[blocks in formation]

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil :

For Thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine ene

mies:

Thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my

life;

And I shall dwell in the house of JEHOVAH for ever.

IN

Thee, O JEHOVAH, do I put my trust; let me never be ashamed:

Deliver me in thy righteousness.

Bow down thine ear to me; deliver me speedily:

Be Thou to me a rock of strength, for an house of defence to save

me.
