foul, and body be preferved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift. Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it.' Sanctification then is not a mere Change of our State, but a Change of our Nature: 2 Cor. iii. 18. But · we all, with open face, beholding as in a glafs the • glory of the Lord, are changed into the fame image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.' Chap. v. 17. 'If any man be in Chrift, he is a new creature; old things are passed 6 away, behold, all things are become new.'

It is not an Act done in an Instant, but a Work carried on by Degrees: 2 Cor. iv. 16. "Though our

outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.' And it is never perfected in this Life: 1 John i. 10. If we say that we have "not finned, we make him a lyar, and his word is "not in us.' Phil. iii. 12. Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Chrift Jesus." Sanctification then doth differ from Regeneration taken ftrictly for the Beginning of the new Creature: For Regeneration fo taken, being the quickening of the dead Soul, is done in an Inftant: Eph. ii. 5. God, even when we were dead in fins, hath quickened us together with Chrift.' Compared with John v. 25. But Sanctification differeth not from, but is the fame with Regeneration taken largely for the forming and advancing of the new Creature in all its Parts: Tit. iii. 5. 6. Not by works of righteoufnefs, which we have done, but according to his mercy he faved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghoft: which he shed on us abundant

No Man without real Holiness in his own Perfon, fhall ever fee the Lord, Heb. xii. 14. Howbeit, no unfanctified Perfon can, by any Endeavours of his, work his own Sanctification, or make himself holy: Jer. xiii. 23. Can the Ethiopian change his fkin, or the leopard his spots? then may ye alfo do good, that are accustomed to do evil.' John xv. 5. 6. I am the vine, ye are the branches : he that abideth in me, and I in him, the fame bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. If a man abide not in me, he is caft forth as a branch, and is withered.' Tit. i. 15. 16. Unto them that are defiled, and unbelieving, is nothing pure; but even their mind and confcience is defiled. They profefs that they know God; but in works they deny him, " being abominable, and difobedient, and unto "every good work reprobate. Our Sanctification then is the Work of God only, 1 Thess. v. 23. forecited.

It is a Work of God's free Grace: Eph. i. 4. According as he hath chofen us in him, before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy, and without blame before him in love." And it is such a Work, in that there is no perfonal Worth in us moving him thereto, Tit. iii. 5. forecited. Wherefore the worst and vileft of Sinners may be fanctified: 1 Cor, vi. II. our Sanctification is, is the Holy Spirit: 2 Theff. it. 13. God hath from the beginning chofen you to falvation, through fanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth.' Tit. iii. 5. forecited.

They whom the Spirit fanctifies, are Believers united to Chrift, juftified, reconciled, and adopted into the Family of God. Our Sanctification depends on our Faith, in that it is by Faith, as the inftrumental Caufe, that we are fanctified: Acts xxvi. 18.—That they may receive inheritance among them which are fanctified by faith that is in me.' Chap. xv. 9. Purifying their hearts by faith. Our Sanctification depends on our Union with Chrift, in that it is in Chrift we are fanctified, as Members of his Body: 1 Cor. i. 2. "To them that are fanctified in Chrift Jesus.' Eph. ii. 10. For we are his workmanship, created in Chrift Jefus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we fhould walk in them.' Our Sanctification depends on our Juftification, in that we are fanctified immediately, through the Efficacy of the Blood of Chrift fprinkled on our Confciences: Heb. ix. 14. How much " more fhall the blood of Christ, who, through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without fpot to God, purge your confcience from dead works to serve the living God?? Pet. i. 2. Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through fanctification of the Spirit unto obedience, and fprinkling of the blood of Jefus Chrift. Compared with 1 John i. 7. 'The blood of Jefus Chrift his Son cleanseth us from all fin.' The Blood of Chrift fprinkled on our Consciences hath a fanctifying Efficacy on us, inafmuch as removing the Curfe of the Law, and the Guilt of

Sin, it breaks the Strength of Sin, and the Dominion of it: 1 Cor. xv. 56. The fting of death is fin; and the ftrength of fin is the law.' Compared with Rom. vi. 14. Sin fhall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.' John xix. 34. One of the foldiers with a fpear pierced his fide, and forthwith came there out blood and water.' Compared with Heb. x. 22. Let us draw near with a true heart, in full affurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil confcience, and our bodies washed with pure water.' Gal. iii. 13, 14. 'Chrift hath redeemed us from the curfe of the law, being raade a curfe for us: for it is · written, Curfed is every one that bangeth on a tree: that the bleffing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jefus Chrift; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith,' Our Sanctification depends on our Reconciliation, inasmuch as the fanctifying Virtue of the Blood of Chrift fprings from its atoning Virtue: Heb. ix. 14. forecited. 1 Theff. v. 23. And the very God of peace fanctify you wholly? Rom. v. 10. 11. For if when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his 'Son; much more being reconciled, we shall be faved by his life. And not only fo, but we also joy in God, through our Lord Jefus Chrift, by whom we have now received the atonement. Compared with Matth. i. 21. And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou shalt call his name Jefus: ' for he fhall fave his people from their fins.' Our Sanctification depends on our Adoption, in that being adopted into the Family of God, we receive the Spirit of his Son, conforming us to his Image

Image as our elder Brother, and fo fanctifying us: Rom. viii. 29. For whom he did foreknow, he alfo did predeftinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the first-born among many brethren.' Compared with Gal. iv. 6. And becaufe ye are fons, God hath fent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, cry< ing, Abba, Father.' And 2 Cor. iii. 18. But we all, with open face, beholding as in a glass the · glory of the Lord, are changed into the fame Image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.'

The Work of Sanctification is twofold; namely, habitual Sanctification, producing in us habitual Holiness; and actual Sanctification, producing in us the Acts and Duties of Holiness.

[ocr errors]

Habitual Sanctification is the Work of the Spirit, whereby we are renewed in the whole Man after the Image of God. Sanctification is not a bare amending of our Life; but it is alfo a renewing of Our Nature: Eph. iv. 23. 24. And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteQufness and true holinefs.' In Sanctification we are renewed in the whole Man; that is to fay, in our whole Perfon, Soul and Body: 1 Theff. v. 23. And the very God of peace fanctify you wholly and I pray God your whole fpirit, and foul, and body be preferved blamelefs unto the coming of our Lord Jefus Chrift.' The Soul is renewed, not in refpect of its Subftance, but in refpect of its Qualities of the Mind, Will, and Affections, Eph. iv. 23. 24. forecited. The Body is renewed, in Communion with the renewed Soul, whereby its Members become Inftruments of Righteoufnefs:
