BEHEMOTH OR HIPPOPOTAMUS.

Jobxl, 15-20, 22-24. Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eateth grass as an ox. Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly. He moveth his tail like a cedar: the sinews of his stones are wrapped together. His bones are as strong pieces of brass; his

AGILE AND BEAUTIFUL.

Gen. xlix, 21. Naphtali is a hind let loose: he giveth goodly words. Job xxxix, 1-4. Knowest thou the time when the wild goats of the rock bring forth? or canst thou mark when the hinds do calve? Canst thou number the months that they fulfil? or knowest thou the time when they bring forth? They bow themselves, they bring forth their young ones, they cast out their sorrows. Their young ones are in good liking, they grow up with corn; they go forth, and

return not unto them.

Ps. xviii, 33. He maketh my feet like hinds' feet, and setteth me upon my high places.

LION.

ITS BOLDNESS AND POWER. whelp: from the prey, my son, Gen. xlix, 9. Judah is a lion's thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up?

Num. xxiii. 24. Behold, the people shall rise up as a great lion, and lift up himself as a young lion; he shall not lie down until he eat of the prey, and drink the blood of the slain.

Num. xxiv, 9. He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion; who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee.

Deut. xxxiii, 20, 22. And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head. And of Dan he said, Dan is a lion's whelp: he shall leap from Bashan.

2 Sam. xvii, 10. And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.

1 Kings vii, 29, 36. Job, iv, 10, 11. The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken. The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the stout lion's whelps are

Ps. x, 9. He lleth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.

Ps. xvii, 12. Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

Prov. xix. 12. The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass.

Prov. xx, 2. The fear of a king is as the roaring of a lion: whoso provoketh him to anger sinneth against his own soul.

Prov. xxx, 30. A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any.

Isa. v, 29. Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions: yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and shall carry it away safe, and none shall

deliver it.

Joel i. 6. For a nation is come up upon my land, strong, and

without number, whose teeth are the teeth of a lion, and he hath the cheek teeth of a great lion.

Amos iii, 4, 8, 12. Will a lion roar in the forest, when he hath no prey? will a young lion cry out of his den, if he have taken nothing? The lion hath roared, who will not fear? the Lord God hath spoken, who can but prophesy? Thus saith the LORD; As the shep herd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear, so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and

in Damascus in a couch.

Micah v. 8. And the remnant of Jacob shall be among the Gentiles in the midst of many people as a lion among the beasts of the forest, as a young lion among the flocks of sheep: who, if he go through, both treadeth down, and teareth in pieces, and none can deliver.

Nahum ii, 11-13. Where is the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, where the lion, even the old lion, walked, and the lion's whelp, and none made them afraid? The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lionesses, and filled his holes with prey, and his dens with ravin. BULK AND APPEARANCE. Job xli, 31, 32, 18-21, 11. maketh the deep to boil like a pot: he maketh the sea like a pot of ointment. He maketh a path to shine after him; one would think the deep to be hoary. By his neesings a light doth shine, and his eyes are like the eyelids of the morning. Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out. Out of his nostrils goeth smoke, as out of a seething pot or caldron. His breath kindleth coals, and a flame goeth out of his mouth. Who hath prevented me, that I should repay him whatsoever is under the whole heaven is mine.
