FRENCH, CUSTOM-HOUSE, NEW ORLEANS, LA., Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, Washington, D. C.: SIR: Respectfully referring to your letter of the 20th ultimo, "H. B. J.," I have the honor to inclose you herewith statement of relative quantities and natures of fermented and alcoholic liquors imported into the customs district of New Orleans; the percentage of alcohol in each kind, and quantities of wine fortified with alcohol exceeding in strength 13 per cent., from January 1, 1879, to April 30, 1879. Also statement of quantities of alcohol, wines, and liquors produced in this country exported to foreign countries and their destination; as also such im ported and re-exported without paying duties, from the customs district of New Orleans from January 1, 1879, to April 30, 1879. I have in these statements given all the information that could be obtained, as shown by the appraiser's report. But as regards wines which do not contain more than 24 per cent. of alcohol, it is impossible to give the proof, as no record is kept; nor is the proof given on malt liquors, which pay like the wines a specific duty.
