Should not all children persuade others to go where they may learn something good?

Well, you are learning here what the Savior taught. Can you persuade some one else to come, as Andrew did his brother?

What did Jesus say Simon should be called? Are the Greek names Cephas and Peter the same? - Luke 6: 14.

[ocr errors]

43 WHERE did Jesus go the next day?

Which way is the country of Galilee from the
city of Jerusalem ?-
See map.

Who did he tell to follow him?

44 FROM what city were these three men who followed Jesus?

Where is Bethsaida?

45 WHO did Philip find to go with them? Whom did he tell Philip he had found ?

Did the Savior ever say any thing was written concerning him in the Old Testament ?, Chap. 5: 39.

Where was the city of Nazareth ? 46 WHAT did Nathanael say to Philip?

What do you think was the general character of the people of Nazareth?

Ought you to judge of a child's character before you know him?

47 WHEN Jesus saw Nathanael what did he say ? Do you think he meant he was a very good man ?

If the Savior should speak of you, could he truly say, see, here is a child, in whom there is no disposition to deceive his father or mother about any thing?

48 WHAT did Nathanael ask Jesus?

What was his answer?

49 THEN what did Nathanael say?

Does King of Israel mean the same as Messiah?

50 WHAT did Jesus then say to Nathanael ? 51 WHAT did he promise the people that they should see?

What does the word verily mean.

Do you recollect what took place at the baptism of Jesus? Matt. 3:16.

When he opened blind eyes, or raised the dead, did they not have stronger evidence than Nathanael had, that he was the Son of God? He calls himself the Son of man; was he hungry, and thirsty, and did he sleep like other men?-Matt. 25: 35, 36.

But did not his instructions and miracles prove him to be the Son of God, as those proved him to be a man?

Now this account which John has written is principally made up of the instructions of Jesus; ought you not to attend very carefully to them?

He was with God in heaven, but became a man on earth, to die, that you might be saved; will you think of this much before the next Sabbath?

REVIEW.

In the first lesson John several times uses the term. Word; to whom is it applied?

Where is he now ?-Rom. 8: 34. and Matt. 28:20. What do these passages, taken in connexion, prove Jesus to be?

Where is it said, he made all things?

Where, that he is to be our Judge?

What was the object of John's preaching? Were many of the chief men among the Jews ready to receive Jesus?

Jesus was baptized by John in Jordan. Can you repeat some passages in which he commanded his disciples to baptize?

Would you prefer to be under the law, or under the Gospel?

Will you give the reasons?

Does your heart cling to the Savior as your

dearest friend?

LESSON IV.

Jesus at the Wedding in Cana, and in Jerusalem at the Passover.

CH. ii. 125.

- 1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 And when they wanted, wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. 6 And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three fickins apiece.

7 Jesus saith unto them, Fill the water-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.

9 When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was, (but the servants which drew the water knew.) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom,

10 And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.

1 This beginning of miracles did Jesus

in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and his brethren, and his disciples: and they continued there not many days.

13 T And the Jews' passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, 14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

18 Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

19 Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

21 But he spake of the temple of his body.

22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

23 Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast-day, many

believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.

24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men, 25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

Do you recollect the question with which the last lesson closed?

My dear children, have you often asked yourselves, during the week, what you could do to please and honor him who died for you? In the last lesson, who had been conversing with Jesus?

1 WHAT was there at Cana, three days after this? Where was Cana?

Who was there?

2 WHAT other persons were invited to this marriage?

Had he many disciples at this time?—Chap. 1:40.

3 WHEN they wanted wine, who told Jesus they had none?

Was wine a common drink in that country?
Was it like the wine which we have?

4 WHAT did he say to her?

Does it seem to you that this was respectful, and kind language?-Ch. 19: 26. and 20: 15. Do you not perceive, from these passages, that the language could not indicate unkind feelings?

Would it be proper for you to address your mother in such a manner now, when custom has given a different meaning to the expression?

Did he not know better than his mother, just at what moment to perform his first miracle? 5 THEN what did his mother say to the servants? Should you not think this proved that she did not consider the language of Jesus unkind ?

6 WHAT is it said were set there?

Were Jews accustomed to wash their hands and feet frequently?- Mark 7: 3, 4.

Now do you know what is meant by after the manner of the purifying of the Jews?

If one of these vessels contained four gallons, can you tell how many gallons all of them would contain?

7 THEN What did Jesus tell the servants to do? 8 AFTER they had filled them, what did he say to them?

9 WHEN they presented this wine to the master of the feast, what did he do?

10 WHAT did he say to the bridegroom?
Who is meant by the bridegroom?

Did he know how this wine was made?
From what did the Jews make wine?

11 WHAT is it said Jesus manifested by this his first miracle?

What do you understand by a miracle?

Could any man do such a thing as this of himself?

What effect had this miracle on his disciples ? 12 WHERE did he go after this? Where is Capernauin?

Who went with him?

Did they remain there long?

13 WHAT feast of the Jews was near?

When was this feast instituted? Ex. 12: 12, 13.
Now can you tell why this is called Passover ?
Where did Jesus

How many days did this feast continue ? 14 WHOм did he find in the temple?

For what purpose did they sell these things and exchange money?

Matt. 21: 12, 13.)

15 WHAT did Jesus do ?
