while I am coming, another steppeth | himself away, a multitude being in that down before me.

8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy be, and walk.

9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath.

10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath day; it is not lawful for thee to carry thy

bed.

11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

13 And he that was healed wist not who it was: for Jesus had conveyed

place.

14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto hum, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus which had made him whole.

16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

WHERE was Jesus when he healed the nobleman's son ?

In what manner did Jesus employ himself on his journeys?Acts 10:38. Matt. 4:23.

1 WHAT Was there after this?

Who went up to this feast?

2 WHAT does John say there was at Jerusalem, by the sheep-market or gate?

Have you ever seen a pool, or bathing-place, for the sick and other people?

You may not have seen houses built for bathing, but have you not seen a pond or lake, where people might bathe and swim ?

What was this pool called, in the Hebrew language?

Do you know what Bethesda means?

How many porches were built by the side of this pool?

3 WHO were lying in these porches ?

Can you describe the different kinds of disease here named?

For what were they waiting?

4 WHAT is said to have troubled or agitated the waters of the pool?

Were the people accustomed to ascribe all bles

sings to the agency of angels ?

Heb. 1:14.

Acts 12: 11. Do you not think our heavenly Father is exceedingly kind, to send angels to take care of us? What benefit did the man receive who went into the pool first after the agitation of the water If, at this place, God caused the waters to cure all diseases, can you not tell why it is called Bethesda, or the house of mercy?

>

Can you name any places where those suffering from disease go to benefit their health?

5 DID Jesus find any one there?

How long had this man been sick?

Of what kind was his disease?

6 WAS it known to Jesus that he had been suffer ing for a long time?

What did he say to the man?

7 WHAT did the lame man say?

How was he expecting to be healed?

Do you think this man knew Jesus could heal him?

If men had been as kind as the Savior was, what would they have done for this man?

What do you call that disposition, which leads children to seek their own comfort, and not to care for others suffering?

The most needy are often neglected; what does
Jesus say we should do? - Luke 14: 13.
Do you indulge in selfishness and cruelty?
Do you not sometimes step before others and
take what properly belongs to them.?

8 WHAT did Jesus say to the man?

How long since this man had stood on his feet? - v. 5.

If this man rose up and carried his pallet or mat on which he was laid, what would it prove? 9 WHAT did he do?

What day of the week was this?

If this man, so weak and helpless, so readily
obeyed the Savior, should any one hesitate
immediately to do as he commands?

What does he command all men now to do ? —
Acts 17:30.

Have you obeyed?

10 DID those who knew this poor man rejoice when they saw he was cured?

What did they say to him?

Will you repeat the passage in Ex. 20:8-10 ?
Who alone can heal diseases by a word?

Had not Jesus shown by this miracle, that he
possessed authority to command what he
pleased?

11 WHAT did the man who had been cured of his lameness say to the Jews?

Would you not think it safe to obey any one, who could, by a word, cure a man who had been sick thirty-eight years?

12 THEN What did they ask him?

-Were these persons probably present at the pool, when the man was healed?

13 DID the man know who had healed him ? What prevented it?

As there was a great multitude there, was it not easy for Jesus to pass out of sight among them ?

14 AFTERWARD,

where did Jesus find this man? For what purpose might he have gone there? What feelings are appropriate when we have received great favors?

Should you think the man was thankful to God for the blessing he had received? What did Jesus say to the man?

Was not his very long sickness a very great evil? What can and will come upon all impenitent sinners that is a thousand times worse? Matt. 25: 46.

Are you not exposed to this dreadful evil?
How can any escape? - Chap 3:16.

15 AFTER this, did he know who it was that had healed him?

What did he do?

What might he expect the Jews would do, when informed that it was Jesus who had healed him?

Was this natural ?

Is it reasonable to expect you to love your parents? Why?

To expect all to love God i Why?

16 How did this affect the minds of the Jews? Would it not destroy the influence of Jesus, if the rulers among them charged him with violating God's law; and with being a very wicked man?

What, beside persecuting Jesus in this way, did they seek to do?

For what reason?

Was this a good reason for their enmity? Why? 17 WHAT kind of work was it which Jesus did on the Sabbath?

What did Jesus say to the people ?

Does not our heavenly Father provide for our comfort on Sabbath days?

[ocr errors]

What would happen to the beasts of the field, or the fowls of the air, were it not for his constant provision and blessing on all days? What is said of the Sabbath, Mark 2: 27, 28? Then might not Jesus, the Son of God, properly bless this poor cripple with healing mercy on the Sabbath day?

What is it lawful for us to do on Sabbath days? - Matt. 12: 12.

Is it doing well, to visit the sick, to teach the ignorant the word of God, to hear the truth, and study the Bible?

Have you been doing these things which are right, in a proper manner?

18 WHAT effect did this reply produce on the Jews! Why did they seek the more to kill him?

To whom did they say he made himself equal?
What is said in Chap. 1 : 1 ?

Then, did he not possess equal power and au-
thority with God?

And was this not evident to all who saw his works?

LESSON XI.

Jesus declares his Equality with God.

CH. V. 1935.

19 T Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. 21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto

the Son:

23 That all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father, He that honoreth not the Son, honoreth not the Father which hath sent him.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live. 26 For as the Father hath life in him.

self; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my judgment is just, because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath

sent me.

31 T If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35 He was a burning and a shining light and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

Or what miracle have we an account in the first part of this chapter?
