LESSON XIX.

Jesus goes up to the Feast of Tabernacles.

CH. vii. 1-13.

1 After these things, Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.

2 Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.

3 His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into Judea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.

4 For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to the world.

5 For neither did his brethren believe in him.

6 Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time is alway ready.

7 The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil.

not

8 Go ye up unto this feast: I go no up yet unto this feast; for my time is not yet full come.

9 When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in Galilee.

10 But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.

11 Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?

12 And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him: for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the people. 13 Howbeit, no man spake openly of him, for fear of the Jews.

In the last lesson there was much figurative language; do you recollect to what Jesus many times compared himself?

Can any one in the class explain the meaning of that figure so frequently used?

What effect had his instructions on the Jews? 1 IN what place did Jesus dwell after these things? Why would he not live in Judea?

Was it the rulers, or the people generally, who sought to kill him?

2 WHAT feast was there about this time?

Can you tell what is said of this feast? - Deut. 16:13, 15.

How was it observed ?- Lev. 23: 39.

3 WHO spoke to him about going to Judea? For what purpose did they desire him to go to Judea ?

Do you think that any more than his twelve disciples are here meant ?

4 WHAT beside did they say to him?

If Jesus had sought honor from men, would he not have performed his miracles in all those places where he wished to make friends among the people?

To whom did they tell him to show himself? Did not Jesus perform many miracles before large companies ?- Chap. 6: 9.

5 DID his relatives believe that Jesus was the Messiah?

Were many Jews likely to be at Jerusalem on this great feast day?

6 WHAT reply did Jesus make?

How did the Jews feel toward Jesus at this time? Chap. 5: 18.

When was their time?

As they had no special work to perform, might they not have gone up at any time?

7 WOULD the world hate them?

Are wicked men apt to be more displeased with those who engage with them in sin, or those who reprove them for sin ?

Did the world hate Jesus ?

Why did it hate him?

What would you call the works of the world? 8 WHAT did he tell his relatives to do? Would he go with them?

Why not?

Do men hear truth more profitably when calm, or when excited by passion?

Is it dangerous to be angry? Why?

9 Ar this time, where was Jesus?

Jesus travelled much from place to place; how did he spend his time? Matt. 4: 23.

10 AFTER his brethren had gone, what did Jesus

do?

Was this done openly?

Jews were accustomed to go from different parts of the land in large companies; if Jesus had gone with them, and performed his miracles before them, what would probably have been the consequence?- Chap. 6: 15.

Do you now see one reason why he said his time was not yet ? — V. 5.

11 DID the Jews look for him at the feast? What did they say?

Why did they desire to see him?

12 WHAT was done among the people?

Does this mean complaining in this place, or does it mean there was much discussion among the people?

What did they say?

How did they suppose he deceived the people?
Chap. 5: 18.

But did he not prove clearly that he was the
Messiah?

13 DID they speak freely and openly about him? Why?

acknowledge it?

Has he commanded this?

What promise has he connected with obedience? Matt. 10: 32.

LESSON XX.

Jesus at Jerusalem,

The agitation of the public

Mind about Him.

CH. vii. 14-24.

14 Now about the midst of the feast, Jesus went up into the temple, and taught.

15 And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?

16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that

sent me.

17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

18 He that speaketh of himself, seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him. 19 Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the law, Why go ye about to kill me?

20 The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about to kill thee?

21 Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye all marvel.

22 Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers ;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.

23 If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day?

24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judg

ment.

What did the people say of him? - V. 12.
Do you think he tried to deceive the people?
Why ?
