IN the following Essays, Scripture alone is referred Ito as the basis of argument. In three of them every text is produced in which the terms upon each subject occur. This mode of research has been adopted because it presents the shortest, easiest, and surest means of detecting error, and of discovering truth.
In whatever light the results of these inquiries may appear to the reader, the writer of them can truly say, that they have greatly increased his veneration for, and attachment to, the Bible. They have exhibited to him the extraordinary revelations of God to man. kind, as agreeing with the dictates of the mental faculties which He has given them, and with that fimplicity, benevolence, and perfection, which are manifested in the structure and government of the world. Thus, have they established his conviction, that all proceed from the fame Author. They have also confirmed his belief, that the different revelations themselves are several parts of one vast and varied,
