as chaff that the storm carrieth away. Ps.i. 4: The ungodly are not so; but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. CHAP. IV. 1 Christ fasteth, and is tempted. The angels minister unto him.

THEN was *Jesus led up of the "spirit into well pleased. John, i. 32, 33: And John bare record, saying, I saw the spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon

him. And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. John, iii, 34: For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

"John, xii. 28: Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.

Ps, ü. 7: I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee. Isa, xlii. 1: The words are under ver. 16. Mat. xii. 18: Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved in whom my soul is well pleased : I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles. Mat. xvii

CHAP. IV. * Mark, i. 12, &c: And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness, &c. Luke, iv. 1, &c: Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, &c. bi KINGs, xviii. 12: It shall come to pass, as soon as I am

Afterwards the spirit took me up, and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God into Chaldea, to them of the captivity: So the vision that I had seen went up from me. do. xl. 2: In the visions of God brought he me into the land of Israel, and set me upon a very high mountain, by which was, as the frame of a city on the south. do. xliii. 5: So the Spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house. Acts, viii. 39, 40: The Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more. But Philip was found at Azotus.

Heb. iv. 15; We have not an High-Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities : but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, " Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of

Deut. viii. 3: Man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live. WISD. xvi. 26: That thy children, O Lord, whom thou lovest, might know that it is not the growing of fruits that nourisheth man: but that it is thy word which preserveth them that put their trust in thee.

11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, kangels came and ministered unto him.

12 q 'Now when Jesus had heard that John was cast into prison,2 he departed into Galilee;

13 And leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim :

14 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

15 The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles;

MARK, i. 14: Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God. Luke, iii. 19, 20: But Herod the tetrach, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. LUKE, iv. 14, 31: And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee :-

-And came down to Capernaum a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. John, iv. 43: Now after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee.

When at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulon, and the land of Naphtali, and afterwards did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness, have seen a great light ; they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.
