In her triendships the was fincere and generous; in her manners gentle and hofpitable; in her converfation candid and open; to her dependents mild and beneficent. With a tafte for polite literature, she was converfant in all the works of our most admired English writers; amongst whom Milton, Thomfun, and Young, were her fa vourite

vourite authors. Convinced of the great truths of Christianity, and perfectly free from fuperftition, her picty was fimple and unaffected; to this fhe owed the fingular patience the displayed during a painful and lingering illness of five months, and the calmnefs and refignation with which the viewed the approaches of death. Gen. Belford had made fuch dif pofitions that forty thousand men could not have forced the arfenal. This important fervice, and dispatching trains of artillery to the different camps, kept him on horseback day and night. Such extraordinary fatigue, foch unremitting application, burst a blood veffel in his lungs, and brought on a fever, which carried him off in a few days. For deep knowledge in his profeffion, and great intre pidity of mind, be had no fuperior.
