Wednesday 9.

A letter figned WASHINGTON appeared in the papers, a counterpart to that figned CLINTON fome time ago (fee p. 293.).

Six rioters were this day executed in Hangman's Place, over against the King'sBench, in St. George's Fields. All very penitent except one, who fhook off his fhoes among the mob, and braved death.

At Maidstone affize came on before Baron Eyre, the trial of Wm. Henry Turton, midShipman, for the murder of Ch. Gutherfon, a failor, by beating him in a cruel manner, and ftabbing him with a fword, for difobedience; and Luke Weft, another midhipman, for being prefent, aiding, and abetting. The former was found guilty, but no fufficient evidence of murder appearing against the latter he was acquitted. A petition from the grand jury was immediately prefented to the judge by Ld Lewisham, praying a refpite for Turton, which, after fome confultation with Ld Mansfield, was granted for

The Welch and N. Hampshire militia, and the Queen's reg. encampt on Finchley Common, near Whetstone. The report of their having been reviewed by the King and royal family on the 14th was ill-founded.

Saturday 12.

Adm.-Office. Com. Johoftone, of his majefty's fhip Romney, acquaints the board with his having taken the Pearle, a French frigate of 18 guns, and 138 men, commanded by the Chev. de Breignon.

Being the birth-day of his R. H. the Pr. of Wales, who then entered into the 19th year of his age, the fame was obferved at Windfor with uncommon fplendour. It was likewife obferved in the feveral camps with all the military manoeuvres of a rejoicing day. By an act of Geo. II. his R. H. is now of age to take upon himself the reigns of government in cafe of the king's death, but to no other purpose whatever.

Thursday 17.

At Weedon-bec, a young man and maid playing with a live perch, the lad threatened to make the girl fwallow it, on which she opened her mouth unthinkingly, and the fish Springing out of the lad's hand, suddenly fuck in her throat, and killed her on the spot. Friday 18.

Adm.-Office. Adm. Geary, with part of the fleet under his command, arrived at Spishead, and was expecting the remainder. He brought with him a letter of marque named the Hallwiel, 350 tons, 24 guns, and 80 men, with fugar, coffee, and indigo on board; alto an English brig, her prize, bound from Newfoundland to Lisbon ; and a lugger privateer of 8 guns, and 36 men.

Capt. Wm. Peere Williams, of his majefty's hip Flora, acquaints the board also with his having taken a French frigate called the Nymphe, commanded by the Chev. La Remain, who died the day he was taken of the wounds he received in the action. The Flora had loft her wheel, and must have been taken if the enemy had known her condition. The Nymphe bad 32 guas mounted, pierced for 40, and 291 men, of whom 131 were killed or wounced. The Flora had 36 guns, and 219 men, 27 of whom were killed or wounded.

The parliament, which stood prorogued to the 24th init. was farther prorogued to the 28.h day of September.

Saturday 19.

About fix o'clock in the afternoon, as the phaeton of Manners, efq; fon of Lord W. Manners, was standing in Arlington-ür. St. James's, the herfes fuddenly took fright, and ran into Piccadilly at a furious rate, and threw down a man who had a child in his arms. Both the man and child were greatly bruiled; but it unfortunately happened that the man had a bottle of aqua fortis in his hand: the bottle was broke in the fall, and great part of the liquid pouring upon the child, occafioned a moft fhocking and terrible fcene of mifery and diftrefs; nor had the man much better fortune. The cloaths of both were on fire, their bodies most horridly burat, fwelled, and their eyes closed up, &c. The cries of the child were truely pitiable. At length their cloaths were cut off (for they could not otherwise be got off), and they were put into linen furnished by the Sailed from Plymouth the New-York fleet, neighbours, and carried to St. George's buf

A proclamation, laying an embargo on all Shipping fram the posts of G. B. with proviGions, except to the British colonies or fettle.ments, among which the 13 United Colonies are particularly named. A like embargo is Jaid on fhips from Ireland.

Mr. Alder. Townsend and Col. Barré returning from an excurfion into Norfolk, were overturned in a phaeton by Socon Eton, by which Mr. Townfend's arm was broke both .above and below the elbow, and one of the colonel's arms much bruifed. They had for the preceding stage borrowed the chaife of an acquaintance, who came behind it to drive it back again; Mr. T. wishing to proceed on in it for another stage, and the owner of it refufing, a ftruggle enfued, and by pulling the reins in contrary directions the carriage was overturned in a ditch juft out of Eton. Mr. T. was carried back to. the Cock inn there, where his arm was fet by Mr. Purkis, furgeon of Huntingdon, and is in a fair way. Sunday 20.

About noon a rick, containing near 30 loads of new hay, belonging to Mr. Fletcher, farmer at Enfield Highway, took fire, notwithstanding every precaution to give it air, and was entirely confumed. Another rick contiguous, and a barn full of oats and pease adjoining, were with difficulty faved.

Tuesday 22.

A foldier of the 62d reg. quartered at En-field and the neighbouring towns for the defence of the New River, received 100 lathes at the Frame by Bush-hill for defertion, which he had been guilty of more than once.

We have the fatisfaction to inform our readers, that the two lads mentioned in our laft, p. 343. to have been committed for robbing the Cambridge waggon on Enfield Highway, and to have efcaped by the illconduct of the conftables, have fince, by the vigilance of the fame officers, affisted by a file of mufqueteers, been retaken, in the very houfe of ill-fame where they were refcued, and are now in fafe cuftody.

left for him to lie on the fhock he received from fuch barbarous treatment deeply affected his health and fpirits, and is fuppofed to have haftened his death. He was a younger brother of the antient family of Preudston, in the county of Meath, in Ireland; and his character was univerfally refpected and efteemed by a numerous acquaintance.
