A heart, resign'd, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne;
Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone.

An humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean!
Which neither life nor death can part
From him that dwells within.

A heart in every thought renew’d,
And full of love divine;

Perfect, and right, and pure, and good,-
A copy, Lord, of thine!

Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart,
Come quickly from above;

Write thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new, best name of love.

HYMN 55. C. M.

[ocr errors]

H! give me, Lord, the single eye,
Which aims at nought but thee;
I fain would live, and yet not I—
But Jesus lives in me.

Like Noah's dove, no rest I find
But in thy ark of peace;

Thy cross, the balance of my mind;

Thy wounds, my hiding-place.

In vain the tempter spreads the snare,

If thou my keeper art;

Get thee behind me, God is near,
My Saviour takes my part.
On him my spirit I recline,

Who put my nature on;

His light shall in my darkness shine,
And guide me to his throne.

HYMN 56. C. M.

NOME, Holy Spirit, heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning pow'rs,

Kindle a flame of sacred love,

In these cold hearts of ours.

Look, how we grovel here below,
Fond of these trifling toys,
Our souls can neither fly nor go,
To reach eternal joys.

Dear Lord and shall we ever lie
At this poor dying rate?
Our love so faint, so cold to thee,
And thine to us so great!

Come Holy Spirit, heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning pow'rs;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

HYMN 57. C. M.

OR mercies, countless as the sands,
Which daily I receive;

From Jesus my Redeemer's hands,
My soul, what canst thou give?
Alas! from such a heart as mine,
What can I bring him forth?
My best is stain'd and dy'd with sin,
My all is nothing worth.

Yet this acknowledgment I'll make
For all he has bestow'd;
Salvation's sacred cup I'll take,
And call upon my God.

The best returns for one like me,
So wretched and so poor,
Is from his gifts to draw a plea,
And ask him still for more.

I cannot serve him as I ought,
No works have I to boast;
Yet would I glory in the thought
That I should owe him most.

HYMN 58. C. M.

FOR a thousand tongues to sing
My great Redeemer's praise;

The glories of my God and King,
The triumphs of his grace!

My gracious Master, and my God,
Assist me to proclaim,

To spread through all the earth abroad,
The honours of thy name.

Jesus, the name that charms our fears,
That bids our sorrows cease;

"Tis music in the sinner's ears,
"Tis life, and health, and peace.

Look unto him, ye nations; own
Your God, ye fallen race;
Look, and be sav'd by faith alone,
Be justified by grace.

See all your sins on Jesus laid;

The Lamb of God was slain,

His soul was once an offering made,
For every soul of man.

With me, by faith, ye then shall know,
Shall feel your sins forgiven;
Anticipate your heaven below,
And own that love is heaven.

HYMN 59. C. M.

F all the gifts thine hand bestows,
Thou giver of all good!

Not heav'n itself a richer knows,
Than my Redeemer's blood.

Faith too, the blood-receiving grace,
From the same hand we gain;
Else, sweetly as it suits our case,
That gift had been in vain.
Till thou thy teaching pow'r apply,
Our hearts refuse to see,
And, weak as a distemper'd eye,
Shut out the view of thee.

Blind to the merits of thy Son,
What mis'ry we endure,

Yet fly that hand, from which alone

We could expect a cure.

We praise thee, and would praise thee more
To thee our all we owe;

The precious Saviour and the pow'r
That makes him precious too.

HYMN 60. C. M.

EJOICE, believer, in the Lord,
Who makes your cause his own;
The hope that's built upon his word
Can ne'er be overthrown.

Though many foes beset your road,
And feeble is your arm,

Your life is hid with Christ in God,
Beyond the reach of harm.
