Biographia Literaria: Or, Biographical Sketches of My Literary Life and OpinionsIn this prose work, Biographia Literaria, Coleridge succeeds for the first and (so far) for the last time in English criticism in marrying the twin studies of philosophy and literature, developing his distinction between fancy and imagination. He does this not simply by writing about both within a single book, but by discovering a casual link between the two in the century-old preoccupation of English critics with the theory of the poet's imagination. Besides essays on literary criticism, the book also contains a discussion of the distinction between reason and understanding, an explanation of Coleridge's concept of a "willing suspension of disbelief," a severe critical analysis of Wordsworth's poetry, and detailed portions of the philosophies of Kant, Schelling and Fichte. |
