452. The Minister's Strength, office, and Reward.
(Ephes. iv. 7-13.) L. M.
Lord, Thine appointed servants bless;
And clothe Thy priests with righteousness. 2 Wisdom, and zeal, and faith impart,
Firmness and meekness from above,
And love the souls whom Thou dost love :
By day and night their guard to keep
Protect Thy lambs, and feed Thy sheep.
Let them in hope their charge resign ;
And there with endless glory shine. 453. The Minister's Vows and Responsibility. C. M.
(1 Tim. iii. 13.)
And these are set apart,
With undivided heart.
Which God and man have heard,
In action, and in word.
Hast set Thine Orders three,
To win a good degree;
And in their office tried,
“ Will God in very deed dwell with Men?”
(2 Chron. vi. 18—21.) L. M.
Here to abide, no transient guest ?
And here the Holy Spirit rest?
Yet choose not, Lord, this house alone :
In ev'ry bosom fix Thy throne.
And 'dying sinners pray to live,
And when Thou hearest, o forgive.
The blessed gospel of Thy Son,
Be mighty deeds of mercy done. 455.
“ Where Two or Three, &c." C. M.
(Matt. xviii. 20.)
Thy presence now display ;
So give us hearts to pray.
Our feeble hope to raise ;
That we may render praise.
The contrite heart bestow ;.
To make our graces grow.
In faith address our prayers ;
Unbosom all our cares.
Enforc'd by grace divine,
Diffuse its beams on Jacob's race :
And call them to their native land.
The sad suspension of Thy love?
And wilt thou never, Lord, return?
Their trespass hide, their pardon seal:
And bid its kindled flames expire.
And wake to joy each grateful heart :
Their bliss and full salvation see. 457. “ Ye shall seek Me,&c.” (John vii. 34.) L. M. 1 GREAT God of Abr’am I hear our prayer; Let Abr'am's seed Thy mercy
share : Oh! may they now at length return,
And look on Him they pierc'd and mourn. 2 Remember Jacob's flock of old ;
Bring home the wand'rers to Thy fold
“ Israel at last shall seek the Lord.”
Cut off from their own olive-tree,
For Thou canst graft them in again.
Cause them to choose the better part;
Which hides Messiah from their view. 5 Oh! haste the day, foretold so long,
When Jew and Greek (a glorious throrg)
458. “ God is able to Graff them in again." L. M.
(Rom. xi. 23.)
Still roam the scorning world around;
Outcasts from Sion's hallow'd ground !
The vail which hides their Shiloh's light;
To its own parent stock unite.
With contrite shame his bosom move
The Lord he crucified to love.
feet one temple throng; One God with mutual rapture praise ! 459.“ “ The Day-spring from on high hath visited Us."
(Luke i. 78.) 9th P. M.
Joyful times are near at hand,
By His word, in ev'ry land; Mark His progress,--darkness Aies at His command. 2 While the foe becomes more daring,
While he enters like a flood,
Means to spread His truth abroad; Ev'ry language--soon shall tell the love of God. 3 Oh! 'tis pleasant, 'tis reviving,
To our hearts, to hear each day
How the Gospel wins its way; Those enlightning-who in death and darkness lay. 4 God of Jacob, high and glorious,
Let Thy people see Thy hand;
Through the world, in ev'ry land;
460. Universal Reign of Christ. (Psalm lxxii.) L. M.
1 OUR Lord shall reign where'er the sun
Doth his successive journies run:
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.
And princes throng to crown His head;
With ev'ry morning sacrifice.
Dwell on His love with sweetest song ;
Their early blessings on His name.
find eternal rest,
Peculiar honors to our King;
And earth repeat the loud Amen. 461. God the Protector of His Servants. C. M.
How sure is their defence!
Their help omnipotence.
Supported by Thy care,
And breathe in tainted air.
Thy mercy sets them free,
Their souls take hold on Thee.
We will Thy name adore;
