He wants no advocate his cause to plead;
You will yourselves be patrons of the dead.
No party his benevolence confin'd,
No sect-alike it flow'd to all mankind.
Such was the Man-the Poet well you know,
Oft'has he touch'd your hearts with tender woe:-
For his chafte Muse employ'd her heav'n-tauglit lyre,
None but the noblest passions to inspire:
Not one immoral, one corrupted thought,
One line which, dying, he could wish to blot.-

These, as they change, Almighty Father! these
Are but the varied God. The rolling year
Is full of thee. Forth in the pleasing Spring
Thy beauty walks, thy tenderness and love.
Then comes thy glory in the Summer months,
With light and heat refulgent.-
Thy bounty shines in Autumn unconfind,
And spreads a common feast for all that lives.
In Winter awful Thou! with clouds and forms
Around thee thrown! tempeft o'er tempeft rollid ! &c.
