RECOMPENCE to no man evil for evil. Pro vide things honest in the sight of all men. If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, "Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord." Therefore, if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing, thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome with evil, but overcome evil with good. A THE FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY. The Gospel. Matthew viii. 23-27. ND when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves; but he was asleep. And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying: "Lord, save us: or we perish." And he saith unto them: "Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?" Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying: -" What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him ?" The Epistle. Rom. xiii. 8-10. WE no man any thing, but to love one another for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this, thou shalt not commit adultery; thou shalt not kill; thou shalt not steal; thou shalt not bear false witness; thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY. NOTHER parable put he forth unto them, say a man which sowed good seed in his field: But, while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came, and said unto him, "Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? From whence then hath it tares ?" He said unto them: "An enemy hath done this." The servants said unto him: "Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?" But he said, "Nay; lest, while ye gath er up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn." The Epistle. Colos. iii. 12-17 UT on, therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one another, if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so, also, do ye. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, and hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts, to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do, in word or deed, do all in the name of the Father, by him. A THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY. The Gospel. Matt. xvii. 19 ND after six days, Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart, and was transfigured before them; and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light. And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias, talking with him. Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus: "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias." While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud over-shadowed them: and, behold, a voice out of the cloud, which said: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him." And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid. And Jesus came and touched them,and said: “Arise, and be not afraid." And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no ran, save Jesus only. And, as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying: "Tell the vision to no man, untill the Son of man be risen again from the dead." D The Epistle. 2 Pet. i. 16————21. FOR we have not followed cunningly devised fa bles, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eye-witnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the father honour and glory, when there came such a voice from the excellent glory: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him, in the holy mount. We have, also, a more sure word of prophecy: whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, untill the day dawn, and the day-star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. F SEPTUAGESIMA: OR THE THIRD SUNDAY The Gospel. Matt. xx. 1- -16. OR the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man who is an house-holder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into the vineyard. And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a-day, he sent them into the vineyard. And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the market-place, and said unto them: "Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoev er is right I will give you." And they went their way. Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise. And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them: "Why stand ye here all the day idle?" They say unto him: "Because no man hath hired us." He saith unto them, "Go ye also into the vineyard: and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive." So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, "Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first." And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny. But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise, received every man a penny. And when they had received it, they murmured against the good man of the house, saying: "These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burthen and heat of the day." But he answered one of them, and said: "Friend, I do thee no wrong; didst not thou agree with me for a penny? Take that thinc is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee. Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil because I am good?" So the last shall be first, and the first last : for many are called, but few chosen. The Epistle. 1 Cor. ix. 24.-27 KNOW ye not that theyeth the prize in a run, run all, but one receiveth the prize? So run, that ye may obtain. And every man, that striveth for the mastery, is temperate in all things. Now, they do it to obtain a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. I therefore so run, not as uncertain ly; so fight I, not as one that beateth the air: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection, lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a cast away. |
