REMISCERE.

THE SECOND SUNDAY IN LENT.

The Gospel. Matt. xv. 21-28.

HEN Jesus went thence, and departed into the

TH

coasts of Tyre and Sidon. And behold a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying: "Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil." But he answered her not a word. And his disciples came and besought him, saying: "Send her away; for she crieth after us." But he answered, and said: "I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel." Then came she and worshipped him, saying: "Lord, help me." But he answered and said: "It is not meet to take the childrens bread, and to cast it to dogs." And she said: "Truth, Lord; yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters table." Then Jesus answered, and said unto her: "O woman, great is thy faith; be it unto thee even as thou wilt." And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.

The Epistle. 1 Thess. iv. 17.

URTHERMORE, then, we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us, how ye ought to walk, and to please God, so ye would abound more and more. For know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour; not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God. That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter; because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you, and testified. For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness,

was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said: "He casteth out devils through Beelzebub, the chief of the devils." And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from heaven. But he, knowing their thoughts, said unto them; "Every kingdom divided against itself, is brought to desolation; and a house divided against itself falleth. If satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? Because ye say, that I cast out devils through Beelzebub. And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: but when a stronger than he shall i come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest: and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits, more wicked than himself; and they enter in, and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first." And it came to pass as he spake these things a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him: "Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked." But he said, "Yea, rather blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it."

The Epistle. Ephes. v. 1-13.

BE ye therefore followers of Cod, as dear chil

dren; and walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God, for a sweet smelling savour. But fornication and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named amongst you, as be cometh saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient; but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ, and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Be not ye, therefore, partakers with them; for ye were sometimes darkness, but now ye are light in the Lord; walk as children of light: (For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, and righteousness, and truth) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them: for it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved, are made manifest by the light; for whatsoever doth make manifest, is light. Wherefore he saith: "Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light."

LETARE. THE FOURTH SUNDAY IN Lent.

The Gospel. John vi. 1-15.

FTER these things, Jesus went over the sea of Galilee, which is the sea of Tiberias. And a great multitude followed him, because they saw his

miracles which he did on them that were diseased. And Jesus went up into a mountain, and there he sat with his disciples. And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, "Whence shall ye buy bread, that these may eat?" (And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.) Philip an swered him: "Two hundred penny-worth of bread is not sufficient for them, that every one of them may take a little." One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, saith unto him: "There is a lad here, which hath five barly-loaves, and two small fishes: but what are they among so many?" And Jesus said, "Make the men sit down." Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were filled, he said unto his disciples: "Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost." Therefore they gathered them together, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley-loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said: "This is of a truth that proph et that should come into the world."

The Epistle. Gal. iv. 21-31. TH ELL me, ye that desire to be under the law. do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two sons; the one by a bond-maid, the other by a free woman. bond-woman was born after the flesh; but he of the But he who was of the

free woman was by promise. Which things

are an

allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one

from the mount Sina, which gendered to bondage, which is Agar; for this Agar is mount Sina in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem, which is above, is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written: "Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not : for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband." Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then, he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless, what saith the scripture? "Cast out the bond-woman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman." So then, brethren, we are not children of the bond-woman, but of the free.

JUDICA. THE FIFTH SUNDAY IN LENT.

The Gospel John viii. 4659.

JESUS said: "Which of you convinceth me of

sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not be lieve me? He that is of God heareth God's words: ye, therefore, hear them not, because ye are not of God." Then answered the Jews and said unto him, "Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?" Jesus answered, "I have not a devil : but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me.And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth. Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my sayings he shall never see death." Then said the Jews unto him, "Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou 'sayest, if a man keep my sayings he shall never taste of death. Art thou
