PRAYER FOR A CHRISTIAN TEMPER.

Perfecting holiness in the fear of God. 11. Cor.

vii. 1.

O THOU, who spake as never man spake (a), and who gave us a new commandment, that we should love one another (b), even our enemies, that we should bless them that curse us, do good to them that hate us, and pray for them that despitefully use us, and persecute us (c), shed thy love abroad in my

heart (d), that I may follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness (e); that I may be forbearing and forgiving (f); kind and tenderhearted (g); pitiful and courteous; not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing, but, contrariwise, blessing (h); endeavouring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace (i), and adorning the doctrine of thee, my Saviour, in all things (j).

And grant that, above all things, I may put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness; and humbleness of mind(); not to think of myself more highly than I ought to think, but

to think soberly (1), esteeming others better than myself (m); nor trusting in uncertain riches, but in the living God; being rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate (n),and learning in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content (o). Finally, whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, grant that I may think on, and practise these things (p).

TRUST IN GOD.

They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah xl. 31.

PRESERVE me, O God, for in thee do I put my trust. O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord: "Thou art my God (a): thou art my portion, therefore will I hope in thee: thou art good unto them that wait for thee, to the soul that seeketh thee (b)." thou only upon God,

the Lord than to put confidence in princes(d). He is the Rock, his work iş perfect, for all his ways are judgment: a God oftruth and without iniquity, just and right is he(e).

I know, O Lord, that thou canst do every thing (f): it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power(g): thine hand is not shortened that it cannot save, neither is thine ear heavy that it cannot hear (h). Therefore will I not be afraid for the terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day; nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor for the destruction that wasteth at noon day (i): yea, though I walk through the valley ofthe shadow
