THE SPIRITUAL WARFARE.

The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh and these are contrary the one to the other; so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.---Gal, v. 17.

1. WHAT strange oppositions I feel,
A war in the members indeed! euent
The flesh, and the legions of hell 2012
United, my course would impede.
A kingdom of darkness and light,
The flesh and the Spirit of life,
Present themselves oft to my sight:
I feelingly witness the strife.

2. Is this the right path to that place
Where pleasures eternally flow!
Are these the sure marks of that race
Brought savingly Jesus to know?
Yes, this is the path all have trod, 5
That ever were taught of the Lord,
They travell'd this perilous road,
And fought with the spiritual swordje

2. Old Israel possess'd the fair land,
Jehovah so freely had given;
Yet oft'times were put to the stand,
Maintaining their temporal heav'n.

"Tis thus with the souls who believe,
Though Jesus and all things are their's,
Through in-bred corruptions they grieve,
And mourning is mixt with their prayers.

Every heaven-born soul has two natures—
The former was derived

the old and the new.
from Adam the earthly; the latter is derived
from, and given by Christ, the head of influ-
ence, the heavenly Adam. The old nature is
corrupt in every member; nor does grace ever
produce the least alteration in the nature of the
old man.
Grace often limits the wild ranting of
the old man, it is true; and were it not so, not
a child of God would, in the evil day of tempta-
tion, stand the fiery trial. Grace, like a chain
put round the neck of a furious beast to keep him
in due bounds, holds back a believer from exe-
cuting his corrupt purposes, and from following
the many specious devices of his deceitful heart.
The new man is the image, or likeness, of Christ,
brought forth by his immediate power: its nature
is righteousness and true holiness; and, conse-
quently, its desires must be the same: "Make
the tree good, and the fruit will be good."-Now,
believer, sin lives in thee, though thou canst not
live quietly in sin: God forbid! The Spirit also
dwells in thee, and this is the spring of all thy
spiritual action. From these two sources arise
the contrary sensations in thy bosom, almost daily.

THE WORLD AND THE CHURCH CONTRASTED.

Their rock is not as our Rock.---Deut. xxxii. 31.

1. WHAT a polluted world it is,
A vale of sin and woe!

The sons of earth complain of this,
But Zion feels it so.

2. The world to creature-objects fly,
Their maladies to heal;
But Zion cries to God on high,
Do thou thy face reveal.

3.

"Saviour divine, reveal thy love;

Bright morning star arise,

"And lead my thoughts to things above; "E'en to the upper skies.

4. "This shall create a joy within,

Beyond what angels know;

"Shall stimulate my powers to sing

"The Saviour's praise below.'

Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upwards; but, instead of trouble leading a sinner to God, it leads him, if possible, farther from

him; unless God, by the trouble, open his heart to discipline, and lead him to trace the root of his evils in his fallen nature, and mercifully guide his feet into the way of peace. It is common for a man to imagine that trouble has in itself something meritorious, especially if borne with patience; thus, he imposes on himself, through the darkness that is in his understanding. That trouble which frequently hardens the carnal world in sinning with a high hand, softens the believer; see the reason given by St. Paul,— (ROM. VIII. 28.)

THE GLORIOUS GOSPEL.

And hath brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel.---2 Tim. 1. 10.

1. THE Gospel tidings cheer my soul,
Christ is the substance of the whole!

Here is a feast divinely spread,

Here shall the hungry soul be fed.

2. Deep sunk in sin and foul disgrace

Are all of Adam's feeble race:

But Jesus, to redeem his own,

Descends, and makes his wonders known.

D

3. He came to do the Father's will,
He came the promise to fulfil;
Mercy and truth and love and grace,
Shine to the full in Jesu's face.

4. Mysterious plan! and all of grace!
To save a part of Adam's race!
The rest, the great Eternal saith,
Pass to the shades of endless death.

5. Offensive as the doctrine is

To some, 'tis here I feel my bliss:
His sov'reign love, his firm decrees,
Preserve amidst tempestuous seas.

6. Be still, my soul! and humbly own
Thy God, the great Supreme, alone!
His wond'rous ways no tongue can tell,
His judgments are unsearchable.

The Gospel is nothing less than a rich and full display of the wisdom, power, and love, of the Eternal Three, made known to his elect as the sum and substance of all real bliss. The Gospel is a feast prepared by Wisdom, for the simple, the lost, the undone, the weary and heavy-laden, the sin-burthened and soul-distressed: to these Wisdom's voice is directed in the
