From the Lamb the purple flood
Drops, in sad Gethsemane.

4. Now behold the Surety bound,
All to set the guilty free;
Yes, the Ransomer is found
Struggling in Gethsemane.

S. What, my Lord, could bring thee there
What! but love most rich and free!
"Twas thy Church, thy tender care,
Led thee to Gethsemane.

6. Say! was ever grace like this?
Greatness in humility;

Gloomy was his path to bliss,
'Twas through sad Gethsemane.

7. Thither, O my soul, repair,
Would'st thou learn humility;
And, when almost in despair,
Call to mind Gethsemane.

O my Immanuel, give me to behold thee in that wonderful love and strange act of humility and condescension, which thou hast manifested to such a vile, hard-hearted sinner, as, thou knowest, I am. Turn away my thoughts from engag

P

ing in vain controversy, and from attempting to speculate on the incomprehensible mysteries of thy Person, Let me be as a little child, and help me to rest implicitly on thy blessed testimonies concerning thyself; nor suffer me to venture any further, in my conclusions, than thy blessed word gives me authority.

PROVIDENCE.

And I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.--

1 Kings xvii. 4.

1. THE ravens must feed

The servants of God;

For so 'tis decreed,

The foe must bring food:
Voracious their nature,

They hunt for their food,
But God, their Creator,
Can turn it for good.

2. 'Twas thus with the man
By Ahab pursu'd,

The Lord laid the plan,
And all was for good;

To Cherith directed,

The Lord sent him there,
Thus safely protected,

In answer to pray'r.

3. Believer in Christ,

Does Providence frown?

Thy loving High-Priest

Will ne'er thee disown;

He'll send by the ravens :
Thou shalt be supplied :
He rules in the heavens-
He'll surely provide,

With all the supposed disadvantages of poverty, there certainly are many golden mercies picked up by the believer in that valley. Poverty was the lot of the Master; and is the present lot of many a disciple. The Son of man had not where to lay his head!" and there are many of his chosen, to my knowledge, who can with difficulty keep under a roof, and whose expectation is a Workhouse! But, whatever good arises to God's people from those trying dispensations, those who are the diabolical instruments of oppressing his Church, will receive their reward. The history, and awful end of Ahab, and his Wife Jezebel, should be read by modern tyrants; but, alas!

tyrants seldom read or consider the end of tyranny: -God will punish the seed of evil-doers. How clearly has the hand of God been manifested in hurling the mighty from their seats! Haman was hung on the gallows he had prepared for Mordecai. Pharaoh and his host were drowned in the Red Sea, to afford Israel a song of mercy: I gave Egypt for thy ransom, Ethiopia and Seba for thee. (Is. XLIII. 3.)

THE CHILD OF LIGHT WALKING IN DARKNESS.

When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? ---Job xxxiv. 29.

1. MY case is too gloomy to speak in a rhyme,
A path which the vulture ne'er saw,
Deep sunk in distresses, without a clear sign
Of release from the curse of the law.

2. How hard is my heart! how rebellious and vile, What strange oppositions within!

I trusted my Lord would eternally smile,
And abolish the being of sin.

3. But, ah! I experience the bitter reverse, No freedom, no pleasure to pray;

How shall I proceed my sad woes to rehearse?
My beloved is gone far away.

4. Vile wretch that I am, how soon I'm beguil'd,
And, like a poor sheep, run astray:
No mortal on earth is with pride so defil❜d,
This made him depart far away.

5. The pleasure I felt in his love in time past, Gives my spirit no present relief;

When I with the former the present contrast,
It adds to the load of my grief.

6. But where shall I flee? Shall I fly to the law? That, alas! I pursu'd, but in vain;

Its precepts and threat'nings but fill'd me with

awe,

As toss'd with the waves of the main.

7. But glory eternal to his precious name,
Who bore the full weight of my sin;
His love is eternal, his grace reigns supreme,
He'll turn and revive me again.

8. Lo! he comes o'er the mountains, and leaps o'er the hills,

Compassion I see in his eyes;
