From the Lamb the purple flood
Drops, in sad Gethsemane.

Now behold the Surety bound,
All to set the guilty free;
Yes, the Ransomer is found
Struggling in Gethsemane.

5. What, my Lord, could bring thee there
What! but love most rich and free!
'Twas thy Church, thy tender care,
Led thee to Gethsemane.

6. Say! was ever grace like this?
Greatness in humility;

Gloomy was his path to bliss,
'Twas through sad Gethsemane.

7. Thither, O my soul, repair,
Would'st thou learn humility;
And, when almost in despair,
Call to mind Gethsemane.

O my Immanuel, give me to behold thee in that wonderful love and strange act of humility and condescension, which thou hast manifested to such a vile, hard-hearted sinner, as, thou knowest, I am. Turn away my thoughts from engag

others, who have long lived in fellowship, and walked with God, have had little to say, and that little expressive of thick, mental darkness.[Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?] But such things I have witnessed. What then? Shall he that shivers as he treads the cold waters of Jordan, be deprived of his lot in the promised land? No: Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with hin.

GETHSEMANE.

He humbled himself.---Phil. ii. 8.

1. WOULD'ST thou see a wond'rous sight?
What so wondrous canst thou see,
As Jehovah's chief delight,
Groaning in Gethsemane?

2. See! Jehovah's darling Son,
One with God co-eqnally,.
Press'd with sins, but not his own,
Groaning in Gethsemane?

3. Here behold the Love of God, O surprising mystery!

From the Lamb the purple flood
Drops, in sad Gethsemane.

All to set the guilty free;

15. Beneath the shadow of thy wings
My soul hath sung her cares away;
And now, though mourning, oft she sings
Thy matchless love, thy boundless sway!

16. Cheer up, my soul, thy Jesus lives,
Thy fighting days will soon be o'er!
The sinner, who in him believes,
He'll safely land on Zion's shore.

None can conceive, but those who are taught of God, what conflicting powers beset the believer in his way through this vale of tears to the city of God above. Reader, art thou a soldier of Jesus Christ? never propose a truce with the enemy, nor expect a discharge from this thy warfare, until the earthly house of thy tabernacle is dissolved. There are, however, comforts attend the Christian warfare as well as crosses: "In the world you shall have tribulation: but in me you shall have peace." While a person is in the service of Satan, he meets with little or no molestation: his whole soul is in the devil's service; but when, through discriminating grace, the sinner is translated from his domains, to the kingdom of God's dear Son, all hell is in arms! Your adversary, the devil, walketh about seeking whom he may devour.

PRAYER.

O my God, for good.---Neh. xiii. 31.

1. FORGET me not, O Lord, my God, My soul I cast on thee:

I travel in a thorny road,
O Lord, remember me.

2. Daily I feel a sinful heart-
Can neither fight nor flee ;

Back from the cross I fain would start,
O Lord, remember me.

3. Peevish and fretful, light and vain,
Bound fast, and yet I'm free,
Feel unbelief's tormenting chain,
O Lord, remember me.

4. In gloomy darkness call'd to go,
And can't the Saviour see;

Guide me, my God, my journey thro',
O Lord, remember me.

5. Dark are his ways of Providence,
But fix'd is his decree:

My reason's blind, and weak my sense,
Then, Lord, remember me.
