31. ALL IS WELL. Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him.--~ 1. EXULT, O my soul, in the sound! 'Tis well with the righteous, his heirs. 2.Tis well in the mount, or the vale, When fiery temptations they share; Secures them from falling away; 3. The arm that supports them is strong, Jehovah, their strength and their song, In ev'ry condition, they stand And make his dear people his care. Ransomed sinner! all thy blessings are given to thee in covenant-love; and both thou and thine inheritance will ever remain secure, beyond the possibility of failure. The honor, name, and perfections of Jehovah are the basis upon which thy weather-beaten soul may rest with courage. And, since all the perfections of holiness, justice, and truth, meet in Christ, who is thy Kinsman Redeemer, thou hast a right, at all times, to draw near with boldness to him; believing that all is well, though thy filthy rebellious heart troubles thee every day: Cast not away, therefore, thy confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. 32. THE WEARY PILGRIM's PRAYER, Hear my prayer, O Lord, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears; for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my father's were.---Ps. xxxix. 12. 1. MY Saviour, my Lord, and my God, Grant me the bright beams of thy face: Without the supplies of thy grace. 2. Surrounded with sorrows and cares, 3. His promise preserves from despair The soul, who on Jesus believes; And Zion delights to declare The sweet consolation it gives. The heart his own bitterness knows, And raises my songs to the sky. Pilgrim! sorrow and sighing-strong cries and many tears, are thy frequent portion here below. Couldest thou live, as thou art often charged as living, by thine opposers, (viz. in all manner of sin without remorse!) why, then, there would be an end to the far greater part of thy troubles: would a man grieve and hate himself, with perfect hatred, in feeling and in committing that in which he saw no evil? Certainly not. Why then dost thou groan, day by day? Because thou hast a body of indwelling sin, which works strongly in carnal and corrupt desires; and, sometimes to thy sore grief, makes its appearance in the members of thy body: "If we say (we, the disciples of Jesus,) that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves.""There is not a just man upon earth that liveth and sinneth not." Nothing is more difficult, than for a believer to draw a line of distinction between the flesh and the spirit, when he is sorely tried by the absence of his Beloved, the temptations of Satan, and the horrible workings of his own deceitful heart. Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me, O God! from secret faults. 33. SECURITY. The Lord hath founded Zion.---Is. xiv. 32. 1. ZION's founded on a basis Where no foe can her molest ;* 2. True it is, she hears the thunder, 3. 'Tis by faith I love to view him, 4. May this be my occupation, While in this dark vale below, To proclaim a free salvation, And in knowledge daily grow. * What I mean to convey by the word molest, is, that the Church of Jesus cannot be molested so as to be deprived of their interest in Jesus, or beat off from that firm foundation, which Jesus is, to |
