34. I know the Father and the Son,
And holy Comforter:

In Person Three, in Essence One :-
In this I do not err.

35. This is my daily, hourly boast,
God my Salvation is!

In trials he's my only trust,
My only real bliss.

36. Thus does my soul rejoice in God, Tho' toss'd as on the main;

I rest alone on Jesu's blood,

And hope my port to gain.

The above lines, it will be readily understood, refer to a few passages in the writer's life; but a folio could say but little on a subject so complicated. Twenty years of my spiritual life are gone; nor have I a wish to tread some part of the dreary path already trod. One design I had in writing the above, was, to show to some poor, bewildered sinner, that a God of love and power is able to bring the most bewildered soul to a sweet rest by faith on Jesus. He brings the blind by a way they knew not, and in paths they have not known he leads them. He makes darkness light and crooked

things straight;-these things he does, and then does not forsake them.

END OF THE HYMNS.

Abra'ms seed's a chosen nation
Amidst the various scenes on earth
A righteous Lot in Sodom dwelt....
A sinner must be born again
Attend, ye sons of Day

...

Awake, my silent muse, awake
Awake, my soul, and praise

Bruised reeds shall ne'er be broken
By faith to see the Saviour rise'

Cease believer, cease to mourn
Christ my living portion is

....

Come hither, ye by sin distress'd
Come Saviour, quickly come

Days of darkness and distress

....

....

Dear Saviour look down from above
Did I possess angelic pow'rs

Election! sweet truth!
Exult, O my soul, in the sound

Fixt on Jesu's righteousness....
Forget me not, O Lord, my God
From Sinai thy face turn away
From the Great Redeemer's fulness

Once a poor sinner toss'd about

Once in self my heart was trusting

Poor sinner dry thy tears..

Return, my wand'ring heart...

Salvation! precious sound
Seek ye

the Lord, the Saviour cries
See, my soul! with sacred pleasure
Stand up my soul, dismiss thy fears

Taken from this world of woe
The dealings of God with his own
The fountain-fulness I behold

The Gospel how cheering! its accents how
sweet....

The Gospel tidings cheer my soul
The ravens must feed

The Saviour speaks with accents sweet
The sounds of Lo here! and Lo there!
The tree of Life is Christ, my Lord...
This world, my soul, is not thy rest
Thus, Satan and blind unbelief....
"Tis I, Omnipotent, that speak...

What a polluted world it is
What a vile, deceitfut heart..
What is man? a fallen creature'
What strange oppositions I feel

[ocr errors]

What welcome news to sinners lost..

When to worship, Lord, we meet

Would'st thou see a wond'rous sight
