HYMN 71. C. M.

1 Cor. xv. 20, 21, 22.-Col. iii. 1,

CHRIST from the dead is raised, and made

The First Fruits of the tomb;

For, as by man came death, by man
Did resurrection come.

2 For, as in Adam all mankind
Did guilt and death derive;

So, by the righteousness of CHRIST,
Shall all be made alive.

3 If then ye risen are with CHRIST,
Seek only how to get

The things which are above, where CHRIST At GoD's right hand is set.

HE

ASCENSION.

HYMN 72. L. M.

dies, the Friend of sinners dies! Lo! Salem's daughters weep around! A solemn darkness veils the skies!

A sudden trembling shakes the ground! 2 Ye saints, approach! the anguish view

Of him who groans beneath your load;
He gives his precious life for you,

For you he sheds his precious blood.
3 Here's love and grief beyond degree!
The LORD of glory dies for men!
But lo! what sudden joys we see !
JESUS, the dead, revives again!
4 The rising GoD forsakes the tomb;
Up to his Father's court he flies;
Cherubic legions guard him home,

And shout him welcome to the skies!
5 Break off your tears, ye saints, and tell
How high our great Deliv'rer reigns;
Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell,
And led the tyrant death in chains!

6 Say, "Live for ever, glorious King,

Born to redeem, instruct, and save!" Then ask "O death, where is thy sting! And where thy victory, O grave!"

HYMN 73. L. M.

OUR LORD is risen from the dead,

Our JESUS is gone up on high; The powers of hell are captive led, Dragg'd to the portals of the sky. 2 There his triumphal chariot waits,

And angels chant the solemn lay: "Lift up your heads, ye heav'nly gates! "Ye everlasting doors, give way!"

3 Loose all your bars of massy light,

And wide unfold the radiant scene; He claims those mansions as his right; Receive the King of Glory in.

4 "Who is the King of Glory, who?"

The LORD that all his foes o'ercame, The world, sin, death, and hell o'erthrew, And JESUS is the conq'ror's name.

5 Lo! his triumphal chariot waits,

And angels chant the solemn lay, "Lift up your heads, ye heav'nly gates! "Ye everlasting doors, give way!"

6 "Who is the King of Glory, who?"

The LORD of boundless power possess'd, The King of saints and angels too, GOD over all, for ever bless'd.

WHITSUNDAY.

HYMN 74. C. M.

COME, HOLY GHOST, Creator come,

Inspire these souls of thine;

Till every heart which thou hast made,
Be fill'd with grace divine.

2 Thou art the Comforter, the gift
Of GoD, and fire of love;
The everlasting spring of joy,
And unction from above.

3 Thy gifts are manifold, thou writ'st
GOD's law in each true heart;
The promise of the Father, thou
Dost heav'nly speech impart.

4 Enlighten our dark souls, till they
Thy sacred love embrace;
Assist our minds, by nature frail,
With thy celestial grace.

5 Drive far from us the mortal foe,
And give us peace within,
That, by thy guidance blest, we may
Escape the snares of sin,

6 Teach us the Father to confess,
And Son, from death revived,
And thee, with both, O HOLY GHOST,
Who art from both derived.

HYMN 75. C. M.

COME, Holy Spirit, Heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning powers;

Kindle a flame of sacred love

In these cold hearts of ours.

2 See how we grovel here below,
Fond of these earthly toys:
Our souls, how heavily they go,
To reach eternal joys!

3 In vain we tune our lifeless songs,
In vain we strive to rise!

Hosannas languish on our tongues,
And our devotion dies.

4 Come, Holy Spirit, Heav'nly Dove,
With all thy quick'ning powers;
Come, shed abroad a Saviour's love,
And that shall kindle ours.

HYMN 76. C. M.

HE'S come, let every knee be bent,

All hearts new joy resume;

Sing, ye redeem'd, with one consent,
"The Comforter is come.'

2 What greater gift, what greater love,
Could GOD on man bestow?
Angels for this rejoice above,
Let men rejoice below!

3 Hail, blessed Spirit! may each sou.
Thy sacred influence feel;

Do thou each sinful thought control,
And fix our wav'ring zeal.

4 Thou to the conscience dost convey
Those checks which we should know;
Thy motions point to us the way;
Thou giv'st us strength to go.

TRINITY SUNDAY.

HYMN 77. L. M.

HOLY, holy, holy LORD!

Bright in thy deeds and in thy name,

For ever be thy name adored,

Thy glories let the world proclaim !

2 O JESUS, Lamb once crucified

To take our load of sins away,
Thine be the hymn that rolls its tide
Along the realms of upper day !

3 O Holy Spirit from above,

In streams of light and glory giv'n,

Thou source of ecstacy and love,

Thy praises ring through earth and heav'n!

4 O GOD triune to thee we owe

Our every thought, our every song;

And ever may thy praises flow

From saint and seraph's burning tongue!

HYMN 78. L.M.

FATHER of all, whose love profound

ransom for our souls hath found, Before thy throne we sinners bend; To us thy pard'ning love extend! 2 Almighty Son, incarnate Word, Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, LORD, Before thy throne we sinners bend; To us thy saving grace extend! 3 Eternal Spirit, by whose breath The soul is raised from sin and death, Before thy throne we sinners bend; To us thy quick'ning power extend ! 4 JEHOVAH! Father, Spirit, Son, Mysterious Godhead, Three in One! Before thy throne we sinners bend; Grace, pardon, life, to us extend!

HYMN 79. II. 4.

E give immortal praise

WE

To God the Father's love;

For all our comforts here,

And all our hopes above:
He sent his own
Eternal Son,

To die for sins

That man had done.

2 To God the Son belongs
Immortal glory too,
Who saved us by his blood
From everlasting wo:

And now he lives,

And now he reigns,

And sees the fruit
Of all his pains.

3 To GOD the Spirit, praise
And endless worship give,
Whose new-creating power
Makes the dead sinner live:
His work completes
The great design,
And fills the soul
With joy divine.

4 Almighty GoD! to thee
Be endless honours done;
The sacred Persons three,
The Godhead only one:
Where reason fails

With all her powers,
There faith prevails,
And love adores.

FAST-DAY.

HYMN 80. C. M.

ALMIGHTY LORD! before thy throne

mourning people bend:

'Tis on thy pard'ning grace alone,
Our prostrate hopes depend.

2 Dark judgments, from thy heavy hand,
Thy dreadful power display;

Yet mercy spares our guilty land,
And still we live to pray,

3 How changed, alas! are truths divine,
For error, guilt, and shame;
What impious numbers, bold in sin,
Disgrace the Christian name.

4 0 turn us, turn us, mighty LORD,
Convert us by thy grace;

Then shall our hearts obey thy word,
And see again thy face.

5 Then should oppressing foes invade,
We will not sink in fear;

Secure of all-sufficient aid,

When GOD, our GoD, is near.

HYMN 81. III.3.

DREAD JEHOVAH! GOD of nations!

From thy temple in the skies,
Hear thy people's supplications,
Now for their deliv'rance rise:
2 Lo! with deep contrition turning,
Humbly at thy feet we bend;
Hear us, fasting, praying, mourning,
Hear us, spare us, and defend.

3 Though our sins, our hearts confounding,
Long and loud for vengeance call,
Thou hast mercy more abounding,
JESUS' blood can cleanse them all.

4 Let that love veil our transgression,
Let that blood our guilt efface:
Save thy people from oppression,
Save from spoil thy holy place.
HYMN 82. L. M.

Prayer and Hope of Victory.

NOW may the GOD of grace and power
Attend his people's humble cry;
Defend them in the needful hour,

And send deliv'rance from on high.

2 In his salvation is our hope,.

And in the name of Israel's GOD,
Our troops shall lift their banners up,
Our navies spread their flags abroad.
