*The Devil had conquered a King of Ifrael, and taken Poffeffi on of him, and by tormenting him before Death, triumphed in it. But David's Playing outfaced him, because the Mufick was expreffive of Chrift's future Conqueft over him; (the Devil knew that Chrift was to conquer and torment him;) and when the Wicked Spirit, whom God had permitted to torment Saul for his Wickedness, heard thofe Songs of Triumph, and the Mufick that twas to celebrate the Conqueft over him, the Thought of it, and the Confequences tormented him fo, that he was not able to stand it, but fled from the Sounds which raised in him the dreadful Idea of being overcome and configned to etrenal Mifery, and fo terrified him till he let go his Prey. Saul feems to have been delivered unto Satan, (as I Cor. v. 5.) for the destruction of the Flesh, that the Spirit might be faved in the Day of the Lord Jefus.

Since it was natural only to commit the Body of a dead Perfon to the Adamah from whence it was taken, hide it that it fhould not be offenfive to the Living; and fince they could have no Hopes that a Body when its Bowels and Brains were taken out, or even when the intire Body was included in Gums, Spices, &c. fhould rife or come to Life again, within the Time, the Flesh or even the Bones could be preserved,

any where but in Egypt or fuch another Tract, of which we have but heard of one, We must enquire into the Meaning of thefe Customs. The Practice of preserving the dead Bodies from Corruption, anointing them, involving them in Linen, and Aromatics, embalming them, mourning for them, making Burnings (I fuppofe of Aromatics) at their Death, or before their Funerals, burying them in Caves, was used for the Patriarchs who were Kings, for Jofeph who was joint King, and for other Kings afterwards, was begun long before Writing, and was continued downward; and it seems doubtful whether burning the Bodies of fome was not ancient; and we find no Evidence that thefe Things were done either to Prophets or Priefts, (except as the Patriarchs and Jofeph were fuch alfo,) nor at all to the common People, till low down among the Heathens, when they run into Abuses of every Institution through Ignorance. The Death of each Patriarch or King, who were Types, was the End of each of their Reigns, and what was done to them after Death, and approved by Scripture must have had an Inftitution, was typical, (he who was excluded being a Type, had not these Marks,) was to be done either really, or fpiritually, or both, to fome dead King, which was to complete what these typical Actions exhibited. Gen. xxiii. Abraham who was Prince of the Aleim, mourned and wept for Sarah, purchased a Cave and buried her in it. xlix. 31. There they buried Abraham and Sarah his Wife, there they buried Ifaac and Rebeccah his Wife, H 3

and there I buried Leah (the Mother of Judah) 1. 2. Ifrael was embalmed. ver. 3, it appears that 40 Days were neceffary to make the Body fit to endure Carriage, or &c. but not that Embalming was common: They mourned 70 Days, after that other feven Days, and buried him in the faid Cave. ver. 26. Jofeph was embalmed and put into a Coffin. Thefe Things were done to affure the Children of Ifrael that they were to return to, and to enjoy Canaan. 2 Par. xiv. 14. And they buried him [King Afa] in his own Sepulchre which he had made for himself in the City of David, and laid him in the Bed which was filled with fweet Odours and diverfe Kinds of Spices prepared by the Apothecaries Art: And they made a very great Burning for him. (It is as much as we can expect that the Scripture fhould give one full Account of any Custom, and that the reft will be in fhort) xxi. 19. And his [Jehoram's] People made no Burning for him, like the Burning of his Fathers They buried him in the City of David; but not in the Sepulchres of the Kings. Jer. xxii. 18. They shall not lament for him [Jehoiakim King of Judah] Saying, Ab Adon, or ab his Glory. He fhall be buried with the Burial of an Afs. xxxiv. 5. But thou [Zedekiah] fhalt die in Peace: And with the Burnings of thy Fathers the former Kings which were before thee, fo fhall they burn Odours for thee, and they fhall lament thee, faying, Ab Adon. It appears fully that thefe Rites were inftituted, because they are allowed to those who
