THIS version of the Gospel by Matthew is submitted to the Christian Public with great deference. It is designed for the simple-minded,—for such as are open to the convictions of truth, through whatever medium conveyed.

The translation may by some be considered as somewhat rude, if not inelegant; but it possesses the advantage of being a literal transcript of the original. In no case has this been departed from.

The translation-except in a few instances mentioned in the notes-is that of the late Rev. J. Clowes, A.M., formerly fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge.

So early as the year 1825, when the writer was engaged as a schoolmaster, he found great inaccuracies in the authorized version, and, in common with many others, rejoiced in the translation of Matthew by the venerable Clergyman whose name has just been mentioned. But in his public duties as a teacher, as well on the Sabbath as on the ordinary days of the week, he found many of the notes of too learned a cast for the understandings of the simple, and many others were but references to the works of Swedenborg. This induced him to commence a commentary which should be suitable to those whose education had been but moderate, and whose means being limited, could not purchase many books; he then wrote to, and obtained permission from, the venerable translator, to make any use he pleased of his writings.
