To render the English language easy and advantageous to students, the Grammars from which they are taught should possess the utmost simplicity of matter, combined with systematic arrangement. But it is well known to the instructors of youth that almost all the elementary English Grammars are deficient in this respect, and that such as do possess any claim to systematic arrangement are also wanting in construing and parsing, without which a perfect knowledge of the language cannot be acquired. To remedy these defects this Grammar has been compiled. According to this system the parts of speech are clearly and concisely defined; parsing lessons and exercises, containing their application, are next prescribed; then come the rules of syntax, with appropriate examples to illustrate them.
