JUDAS BETRAYETH HIM WITH A KISS: JESUS IS TAKEN AND LED UNTO ANNAS AND CAIAPHAS.

ST. MATT. Xxvi. 40-58; ST. MARK xiv. 37 -52; ST. LUKE Xxii. 45-54; ST. JOHN xviii, 1-16.

AND He cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them asleep, and saith unto Peter,

What, could ye not watch with Me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

And lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Master, and kissed. Him. And Jesus said unto him;

Friend, wherefore art thou come? Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

Then the band, and the captain, and officers of the Jews took Jesus, and bound Him; and led Him away to Annas first ;and to Caiaphas the high-priest.

Prayers.

O GOD, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright: Grant to us such strength and protection as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations; and give us grace to use such abstinence and watchfulness that our flesh being subdued to the spirit, we may ever obey Thy godly motions in righteousness and true holiness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

From all blindness of heart, from pride, vain-glory, and hypocrisy,

Good Lord, deliver us!

JESUS IS EXAMINED BEFORE CAIAPHAS; AND TWICE

DENIED BY PETER.

ST. JOHN Xviii. 19-25; ST. MATT. XXVI. 6972; ST. MARK xiv. 66-70; ST. LUKE Xxii. 55-58.

THE high-priest asked Jesus of His disciples, and of His doctrine. Jesus answered him,

I spake openly to the world, I ever taught in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews alway resort, and in secret have I said nothing. Why askest thou Me? Ask them which heard Me, what I have said unto them behold, they know what I said.

And one of the officers struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest

Thou the high-priest so; Jesus answered him,

If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why smitest thou Me?

And as Peter was beneath in the palace, there cometh one of the maids of the highpriest; and when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked upon him, and said, And thou also wast with Jesus of Nazareth. But he denied, saying, I know not, neither understand I what thou sayest. And he went out into the porch, and the cock crew. And a maid saw him again, and began to say to those that stood by, This is one of them; and he denied it again.
