sent Him again to Pilate. Pilate, willing to release Jesus, spake again unto them. But they cried again, saying, CRUCIFY HIM, CRUCIFY HIM! Pilate therefore brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew Gabbatha. And it was the Preparation of the Fassover, and about the sixth hour; and he saith unto the Jews, BEHOLD YOUR KING!

When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him!

When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it. Then answered all the people and said,

HIS BLOOD BE ON US AND ON OUR CHILDREN!

Prayer.

MERCIFUL God, who hast made all men, and hatest nothing that Thou hast made, nor wouldest the death of a sinner, but rather that He should be converted and live; Have mercy upon all Jews, Turks, Infidels, and Heretics, and take from them all ignorance, hardness of heart, and contempt of Thy word; and so fetch them home, blessed Lord, to Thy flock, that they may be saved among the remnant of the true Israelites, and be made one fold under one Shepherd, Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, world without end. AMEN.

UPON THE CLAMOUR OF THE PEOPLE, THE MURDERER BARABBAS IS RELEASED, AND JESUS DELIVERED UP TO BE CRUCIFIED CROWNED WITH THORNS, SPIT ON, AND MOCKED.

ST. MATT. xxvii. 26-30; ST. MARK XV. 15-19; ST. LUKE Xxii. 20-25; ST. JOHN xix. 16.

THEN Pilate released Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus he delivered Him to be crucified. Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto Him the whole band. And they stripped Him, and put on Him a scarlet robe. And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they bowed the knee before Him, and mocked Him, saying,

HAIL, KING OF THE JEWS!

Prayer.

O LORD Jesus Christ, who wast wounded for our transgressions, and bruised for our iniquities, and didst submit to be mocked and spitefully entreated; Grant me grace that I may never be ashamed of Thee and Thy Gospel; but looking upon myself as sinful dust and ashes, may constantly acknowledge and worship Thee as my Saviour, King and Lord, Who livest and reignest with the Father and the Holy Ghost, world without end.

AMEN.

JESUS FAINTETH IN BEARING HIS CROSS: HE TELLETH THE WOMEN THAT LAMENT HIM, THE DESTRUCTION OF

JERUSALEM.

ST. MATT. xxvii. 31, 32; ST. MARK XV. 20, 21; ST. JOHN xix. 17; ST. LUKE XXII. 26, 32.

AND after that they had mocked Him, they took the robe off from Him, and put His own raiment on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.

And He bearing His cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew, GOLGOTHA. And as they led Him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the Cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.
