And there followed Him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented Him. But Jesus turning unto them, said,

Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for Me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

Prayer.

O LORD and Saviour Jesus Christ, who for us men, and for our salvation, didst patiently go forth, bearing Thy cross; Grant me the help of Thy grace, that I may be ready to deny myself, and take up my cross daily, and follow Thee, by continually mortifying all evil and corrupt affections, and daily proceeding after Thy example in all virtue and godliness of living. AMEN.

Nine o'clock.

"The Third hour."

JESUS IS CRUCIFIED; HANGETH BETWEEN TWO THIEVES; PRAYETH FOR HIS ENEMIES ; THEY CAST LOTS FOR HIS GARMENTS.

ST. MATT. xxvii. 33-35; ST. MARK XV. 22-25; ST. LUKE Xxiii. 33, 34; ST. JOHN xix. 17, 18, 23, 24.

AND when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, or Calvary, that is to say, a place of a skull, they gave Him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when He had tasted thereof He would not drink.

There they crucified Him, and two other with Him,-malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Then said Jesus,

Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.

And they parted His raiment and cast lots.

And it was the third hour, and they crucified Him.

Prayer.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who of Thy tender love towards mankind, hast sent Thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ, to take upon Him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross, that all mankind should follow the example of His great humility: Mercifully grant, that we may both follow the example of His patience, and also be made partakers of His resurrection, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.

JESUS IS REVILED; SUFFERETH THE TRIUMPHING
REPROACHES OF THE JEWS.

ST. MATT. xxvii. 36-43; ST. MARK XV. 26-32; ST. LUKE Xxiii. 35-38; ST. JOHN xix. 19-22.

AND Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross,-over Him; in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew,

Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews;

And sitting down they watched Him there. And the people stood beholding. And they that passed by reviled Him, wagging their heads, and the rulers also with them derided Him, saying, If Thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross: He saved others, let Him save Himself if He be Christ, the Chosen of God.

E

Prayer.

O SAVIOUR of the world, who by Thy cross and precious blood hast redeemed us; save us, and help us, we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord!

By Thy Cross and Passion,

Good Lord deliver us!
