into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.

And Jesus stood before the governor. And Pilate asked Him, Art Thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. Pilate then went out unto the Jews, and said, What accusation bring ye against this man? And they began to accuse Him of many things, but He answered nothing. Then they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place. When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean. And as soon as he knew that He belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod. And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad for he was desirous to see Him of a long season, because he had heard many things of Him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by Him. Then he questioned with Him in many words; but Jesus answered him nothing. And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused Him. And Herod with his men of war set Him at nought, and mocked Him, and arrayed Him in a gorgeous robe, and sent Him again to Pilate. When Pilate was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man, for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of Him. Then Pilate called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people, and said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one

that perverteth the people: and, behold, I find no fault in Him, no, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him. But ye have a custom that I should release unto you one at the passover will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews? Then cried they all again, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber, who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison. Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let Him be crucified. And the governor said, Why, what evil hath He done? But they cried out the more, Let Him be crucified. When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person; see ye to it. Then answered all the people and said, His blood be on us, and on our children. Then Pilate released Barabbas unto them.

Where did our Lord take His disciples after the Last Supper?

Who appeared to our Lord in His agony?

How did Judas betray our Lord?

What miracle did Jesus perform in the Garden of Gethsemane ?

Did the disciples stay with our Lord, or forsake Him?
What did Peter do before the cock crew?

Who was the governor before whom Jesus was brought?
What became of Judas Iscariot?

What message did Pilate's wife send to him?

The Crucifixion.

IN Calvary's mountain, long ago,
Jesus, Our Lord, was crucified,
Nailed to a cross, in torture slow,
For three long hours before He died.

By His own creatures put to death--
For He was God though hanging there—
And praying with His dying breath,

His Father would those murderers spare.

Father, forgive them, was His cry;
Forgive they know not what they do!
Shall not we, dearest children, try
Our enemies to pray for, too?

We are, ourselves, so often wrong
To others, and so often fall;
But Jesus, through His whole life long,
Went about doing good to all.

Now see Him dying on the cross,
To save us all from endless woe;
Well may we weep in sad remorse-

It was our sins that pained Him so.

From even Death the sting He took,
In dying for our sinful sake,
That we, through Him, in hope may look,
Rising once more, the tomb to break.

CHAPTER XLVI.

Jesus condemned to Death. The Crucifixion.

Thief. Jesus is laid in the Tomb.

The Penitent

HEN Pilate took Jesus, and scourged
Him. And the soldiers of the governor

led Him away into the common hall called Prætorium, and they call together the whole band. And they stripped Him, and put on Him a purple robe, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they bowed the knee before Him, and mocked Him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews. And they spit upon Him, and took the reed, and smote Him on the head. Pilate then went forth again, and saith unto the Jews, Behold, I bring Him forth unto you, that ye may know that I find no fault in Him. Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man! When the chief priests therefore and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, Crucify Him, crucify Him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye Him, and crucify Him: for I find no fault in Him. And it was the preparation of the passover; and he said unto the Jews, Behold your King! But they cried out, Away with Him, away with Him; crucify Him.
