law also; and the "curse of the law" is that sentence of wrath and judgment which is suspended over the head of every human being as a sinner by nature and practice. The fearful effects of this curse are to be traced in every thing around us: "Cursed is the ground for thy sake," said the Lord God to fallen Adam, and from that hour to this, sin, death, pain, and affliction, have flowed down to us from that curse as from an inexhaustible fountain. And that tremendous curse of God is not only now in the house of the wicked, but it pursues them into eternity, for in the great day the very language of the judge to all such will be " Depart, ye cursed!" Now there is a redemption from this curse revealed to us in the gospel, and freely offered to all who will accept of it. "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us." Observe the greatness of this ransom; it is Christ, the anointed of God, the Son of

God, "God in fashion as a man!" We have seen that the church worships him in her service; and she has good authority for doing so

angels, and all the heavenly host worshipping GOD AND THE LAMB!" And man may surely worship and adore HIM who is the object of worship to angels! This glorious being, "became a curse for us!" The language is most wonderful; not only did he bear that curse which was justly due to us, but he became a curse, an object of displeasure even to the Holy Father himself! Hence his agony and bloody sweat; hence the departure of the Father from him, when those piercing words were wrung from his lips, "My

God, my my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Hence the convulsion of the material world. All nature stood aghast at the wonderful scene, Christ becoming a curse for us! But when he exclaimed, "IT IS FINISHED," man's redemption was completed. "Then was opened a new and living way to the throne of God; the redemption of all who repent and believe in Jesus was fully achieved! This was the way of access of which Jesus himself spake: "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no man cometh unto the Father but by me.' "I am the door of the fold; by me, if any man enter in he shall find pasture." This was that salvation of which he spoke when he was about to return to the glory which he had with the Father before the world was: "Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature, he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved, but he that believeth not shall be damned." And the apostles obeyed: for we are told "that

publicly, and from house to house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ." And St. Paul declares, "We preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling-block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; but unto them which are called, it is Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God." And he says again, “I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth." "And God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ." "Other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Christ Jesus." "There is none other name under heaven given amongst men whereby we can be saved." And he writes with his own hand at the close of one of

his epistles, "If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ let him be Anathema, Maranatha," that is, accursed; "the Lord shall come." All the apostles testify the same thing. St. Peter says of Jesus,

"that his own self bare our sins in his

own body on the tree." And St. John, that "if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous, and he is the propitiation for our sins.'

The heavenly consolation and peace which fill the bosom of a penitent believer in Jesus are the constant theme of apostolic description. Being justified by faith, we have peace with God." "There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus." "If there be any consolation in Christ, any comfort of love, any fellowship of the Spirit, any bowels and mercies, fulfil ye my joy that ye be like-minded, of one mind, having the same love, of one accord." 66 These things

write we unto you, that your joy may be full." The curse of God is taken away from every believer, in this world and in the next: "There is no more curse to him." He must pay the penalty of sin, he must die; but death is divested of power to hurt or terrify; it is a messenger of peace! He is exposed
