but the parish church is two miles and a half distant from the town; and from some parts of the parish more than four miles. Prejudice seems almost entirely removed; and a pleasing hope may be enter tained that, in this town and neighbourhood, the Redeemer's king

dom will increase.

Davies, Lanybree, delivered the charge, from 2 Tim. iv. 5; Mr. D. Williams, Lanwstyd, preached a practical sermon, from Eph. v. 16. The audience on the occasion was very numerous, and we have reason to hope that many profited in their attendance during the services of the two days.

METHODIST CONFERENCE. [Extracted from the Methodist Mag.]

THE Sixty-eighth Annual Conference of the Preachers, Fate in

[blocks in formation]

On Monday July 22, the Committee, chosen by the preceding District Meetings, consisting of 26 members, in addition to Mr. Benson, late President, Dr. Coke, Secretary, assembled for the purpose of drawing up a plan of the Stations for the ensuing year. Before the conclusion of the week about 240 preachers arrived, and upwards of 290 were present during a great part of the two following weeks.

On Monday, July 29, at six in the morning, the preachers met in full conference, in the chapel in Carver Street. Mr. Charles Atmore was chosen President, and Dr. Coke, Secretary. The sundry Committees, for the different departments of the business to be transacted were chosen, and the necessary Clerks appointed to take an exact account of the various branches of income and expenditure, and to report the same at a convenient time to the Conference. The minutes of the different Districts proposing any new regulations were after=wards read, and proper persons were named to prepare an abstract of them. The Conference then pro=ceeded, as usual, to inquire What preachers were to be admitted into Jull connexion this year? Who were remain on trial? Who were proper to be admitted on trial? What preachers had died during the last year; and who had desisted, or. purposed to desist from travelling? To answer these questions took up a very considerable portion of time; and it was found, upon examination, that 44 were proper to be incorporated with us, and 40 to become probationers. No more than eight of the preachers died last year. The increase of our Societies and Circuits called for an additional number of preachers; and the Conference, desirous to receive none who cannot be recommended in the manner that their @conomy requires, met with some difficulty in procuring them. In deed, the number of preachers recommended to be taken on trial, who had been proposed to, and ap

proved by, their respective Quarterly District Meetings, was found considerably unequal to the de mand. The Conference therefore proceeded to call over the Circuits, and appointed to the Ministry a number of men, well recommended for piety and promising abilities, on condition of their being ap proved by their respective Quarterly Meetings, and by the Preach ers appointed to examine them.

Among other business we find an earnest recommendation of Family Religion:

We again earnestly enforce upou all the people under our care, a conscientious and uniforma attention to this important subject; and solemnly exhort them to maintain the practice of daily prayer in their houses: To have stated times allotted for this purpose; to fix their morning worship, for instance, just before breakfast, and their evening worship just before supper: — To make the daily reading of the Holy Scriptures a constant part of their domestic devotion: To require not only some, but all the members of their respective families to be present at the time of family wor ship, and to allow of no excuses, except in case of sickness, or other unavoidable emergencies; and, once at least in every week, to catechise their children and servants, and converse with them individually on the business of religion,

The increase of the numbers in society in Great Britain, since the Conference in 1810, is 7500, and in Ireland 393. In the West India Islands also, especially in Bermuda and the Bahama Isles, the increase has been considerable, the Word of God having had free course; and many have been turned to the Lord. We have reason to think also, that while the work of God has been thus extended to many thousands of individuals, it has.. been greatly deepened in the hearts of many; their exemplary and godly conversation and behaviour, and their unwearied diligence in all good works, giving undeniable evidence of the truth and liveliness of their faith aud hope, and of the ardour of their lovelo God and man.

Norwich Auxiliary Bible Society.

On Wednesday Sept. 11, a general meeting was held at the Guildhall, in the city of Norwich, the Mayor in the chair. The Bishop of the Diocese, the Secretaries of the British and Foreign Bible Society, Rev. Dr. Baker, Rev. E. Edwards, Rev. Mr. Hare, Rev. E. Valpy, J. J. Gurney, Esq.T. Blake, Esq. Rev. Mr. Kinghorne, &c. were present.

The business was opened by the Mayor. After which the Bishop of Norwich rose, and in a concise but impressive speech, laid before the assembly a luminous statement of the Institution, and congratulated them on the union of enlightened Christians of different ranks and persuasions: Clergymen and Dissenting Ministers co-operating with the present institution in the support of the most beneficent

We are happy to learn that the objections affecting the title to the Asylum, which have for some time past prevented its enlargement, are at length completely removed. A wing is to be added before the winter months set in; and other additional buildings, extending 100 feet (for the present) down the garden, are to be erected early in the ensuing spring. By the late purchase the Asylum is held rent-free: but the funds, intended to be applied towards the proposed additional building, have been thereby proportionably diminished; it will be obvious therefore to the religious public, that the funds will not only require to be replenished, but much increased, in order to enable the Committee to discharge their building obligation.

ON THE SUDDEN AND AFFECTING DEATH OF

THE REV. THOMAS SPENCER.

YON angels, through the regions of the sky
(Hymnug the Saviour's praises as they fly)
Conduct to heav'n's high hill, before the throne,
The spirit of Hoxtonia's fav'rite son!

Oft had they seen, and glory'd in the sight,
SPENCER, array'd in his Redeemer's might,
Stand, like a second David, on the plain
T'oppose the giants of the impious train !

On deeds of earthly heroes, sons of Pride,
They look'd, and wept, and turn'd their eyes aside;
But when they saw thy zeal, heroic youth,
And thy bright vict'ries in the cause of Truth,
When they beheld thee, by the sacred word,
Bring sinners to submit to Christ the Lord,
And lead them on to Calv'ry; there to see
Him who, by death, procur'd their liberty,
They bore the tidings to the realms above,
And with new raptures fill'd the world of love,
