SPECIAL NOTICE.

RALPH ERSKINE'S SERMONS..

The Editor of The Little Gleaner has long desired to see the valuable, rich, and deeply spiritual Sermons of Ralph Erskine reprinted in a way that may place them within the reach of all, He has therefore been reprinting them in twopenny monthly unmbers, and in yearly 2s. 6d. volumes; but, in consequence of their varying so much in length, he can no longer continue the twopenny numbers. He hopes to publish them still in yearly volumes, at 2s. 6d. in cloth, and 3s. handsomely half-bound. He will be glad to receive early, the names of intending subsbribers. He does not ask for pre-payment. He has at present published the Sermons at considerable loss, and as it is some advantage to his printing fund to send them through the post, he hopes the lovers of these precious fruits of grace will adopt, as far as convenient, this mode of ordering them.

One bound copy at the close of each year, 2s. 6d., post-free; or handsomely and strongly half-bound, 3s. ; seven bound volumes sent for the price of six.

Subscriptions payable upon receipt of the volumes.

Booksellers may endeavour to obtain subscribers, as the Sermons will be published by Houlston and Wright.

THE SOWER; a Monthly Serial containing Articles Original and Select, by the Editor of The Little Gleaner.

PRICE ONE HALFPENNY, OR FOUR SHILLINGS PER 100. The Editor of the The Little Gleaner has long desired to furnish a monthly serial at a very low price, having all the acceptableness of a magazine, and all the usefulness of a tract, free from the errors with which tracts often abound. His aim will be to "Sow the Word," to speak scripturally to the world, the mere professor, the seeking soul, and the true believer. May all who love the whole truth feel it their privilege prayerfully to help him in this important work. The abettors of error industriously sow their tares. Lovers of truth, with equal or greater industry, should sow that truth which shall not return void

RALPH ERSKINE'S SERMONS. Various, 2d.

Sermon the Second.

THE SAINT'S SAFETY FROM EVIL.

"There shall no evil befal thee."-PSALM Xci. 10.

"ALL Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable." Every branch of Scripture is profitable; but in a world of sorrows, unfulfilled desires, and gloomy fears, no part of Scripture can be more profitable than the promises. They are, says the Apostle Peter, "exceeding great and precious." Some are positive, and are intended to excite our hopes; others negative, and are meant to allay our fears. Some are absolute, and calculated to inspire our confidence; and others are conditional, and suited to rouse our diligence. "I will instruct thee, and teach thee in the way thou shouldest go." Here is a positive promise. "He that believeth on the Son of God hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation." Here is a negative promise. "I will be a Father unto them, and they shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty," is an absolute promise." "If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love," is a conditional promise. Now the promise in our text is a negative promise, and is intended to be a cordial to our hopes, and a girdle to the loins of our confidence, and a maul upon the head of our fears. "There shall no evil befal thee." think this text shows that the Christian is not always quiet from the fear of evil, but it also shows he has ground to be so. "There shall no evil befal thee." What a full breast of consolation! Oh, may we be enabled to press it to our lips, and suck from it the comforting, strengthening milk it contains. That we may use the means to do so, let us notice the following things:

I. What evil this promise does not exempt from.
II. What evil it does exempt from; and,
III. Whom it exempts from evil.

I

I. This precious promise, "There shall no evil befal thee," does not exempt from—

1. The evil of affliction.-Indeed, the people of God are often more afflicted than others.
