This Miracle our Saviour did in his Way to the Ruler's House, where as he was going, there came certain Persons from the Ruler's House, who laid unto him, Thy Daughter is dead j rvhy troublest thou the Master any sarther: Jesus hearing these Words, and fearing that the Ruler's Faith might fail, laid unto him, Be not afraid, only believe; which made him go on heavily indeed for the Death of his Child, but chearfully enough for the Hopes he had in our Saviour.

When "Jesus came to the Ruler's Houfa ,tis faid, he saw the Minstrels, and the People making a noise: These Minstrels were certain Persons hired to play mournful Tunes at Funerals, according to the Custom of the Jews and .other Nations - , of which we read in 2 Chron. 35. 25. where Jeremiah lamented for Josiah, and the singing Mem and singing Women spake os Josiah in their Lamentations this day; that is, they song Threnes or mournful Songs, compos'd for Lamentation on such fad Occasions, which is there laid to be made an Ordinance in Israel.

According to this Custom and Constitution, our Saviour found these Minstrels in the Ruler's House, playing their mournful Ditties, the People making a noise with weeping and wailing about them; all things preparing with Musick and other Solemnities for the Funeral: when Christ came in, he said unto them, Give place-f or &sSt. Mark hath it, Why make ye such ado, and weep, the Maid is mt dead, hut Jleepcth? meaning, that he would make her Death to be but a Sleep, from whence she should rise, as

believing, laugh'd him to scorn.

But when the People were put forth, he took the Father and Mother of the Damsel, with his three Disciples, Peter, James and John, and went in where see lay; and coming to her as one that was afleep, he took her by the Hand, and the Maid arose: me awak'd as one out of Deep, - came to Life again, and rose up. St. Mark relates it, that Christ beside taking her by the Hand utter'd these Words, Talitha Cumi, which is being interpreted, Damsel, I say

one that waketh out of Sleep.

These are the two Miracles related in the Gospel for this Day, the one upon a disoas'd Woman, the other upon a departed Maid ^ and both of them were very great, and far exceeding all the Powers of Art and Nature: For which reason, 'tis added in the Close, that the Fame thereof went abroad into all that Land. For tho he charg'd them to conceal it, yet the Rumour of it spread far and near throughout that Country. St. Mark adds, that they were astonijk'd with a great Astonishment and elsewhere 'tis (kid upon the like Occasions, that they marvell'd greatly, and glorify'd God: the two usual Effects of his Miracles, to wit, Admiration and Adoration, both which suit very well with the Miracles related to us this Day.

For the First, we may justly raise our Wonder to the highest Pitch of Admiration, and with these in the Text be astonish'd with a great Astonishment, at such amazing Effects of the Divine Power. And indeed if we consider the Greatness of the Works done by him, the Easiness of his doing of them, the Usefulness of them to Mankind, together with the End and Extent of them, we shall find Reason enough to fill us with Admiration and Astonishment.

1st, I fay the stupendous Greatness and Number of our Saviour's Miracles may fill us with Wonder and Amazement. As Christ was a Prophet above all other Prophets, so were his Miracles far above all other Miracles j no Mam ever did the mighty Works that he did, even in the Judgment of his Enemies j nor did all or any that were before him, ever come near him in the Greatness of the miraculous Acts done by him. The Jews of old had a Saying, that all past Miracles should be nothing in comparison of the Miracles of the Meiiias. And indeed if we compare the Miracles of the Prophets, and all that went before him, they are not fit to be nam'd with those that were done by our Saviour ^ and if the Jews were not blinded by Prejudice, they might from thence reasonably have taken him for the true Mellias: for there was no part of the Creation that afforded not some Instance or other of his Divine Power. He had (as a Father hath observ'd) the Blessed Angels at his Call, and the damned Spirits subject to his Will; he commanded the Seas and the Winds, and they obey'd him; he guided the Fishes in the Sea which way he pleas'd, and did many Wonders in the Deep. As for Men, who were his more peculiar Charge, he provided against their

necessities, Miseries and Infirmities ; he fed them by Miracle, when their Provisions fail'd j he heal'd them by Miracle, when their Diseases were otherwise incurable. He cured Blindness from the Birth, remov'd inveterate Dropsies, Palsies and Leprosies; and staunch'd Issues of Blood, which could be no otherwise stopt: yea, he rais'd Persons from the Dead, after they had lain some time in the Grave. The time would fail me to reckon up the many wonderful "Works of our Saviour •, of which St. John in a proverbial Expression tells us, that if they were all put together, the whole World could not contain the Books that should he written. John 21.25. Again,

zly, The Manner and Easiness of his doing those mighty Works, may fill us with Astonishment at the Greatness of his Power•, for whatsoever any Man else did of this kind, he did it by a borrow'd and limited Power, which he could neither communicate to others, nor exercise himself, but by Gcd's special Appointment : but Christ did all by his own inherent Power, the Fulness of the Godhead dwelling bodily in him, by which he did what he pleas'd, how he pleas'd, and when he pleas'd, either by himself or by 0thers j being determin'd by nothing, but by his own Wisdom and Goodness. This I find enlarg'd upon by a Reverend Father of our Church, who tells us, that Christ did all his Miracles, even that of raising the Dead to Life again, with the greatest ease, and without the least difficulty: for he effected these things as well absent as present, as well in an instant, as by degreesj for he did them by the applying of his Hand, by the Touch of his Garment, by the Word of his Mouth, by the Motion of his Will * to shew that any Means would serve, that no Means were necessary, that all Times and Places were alike to the sovereign Virtue he employ'd in doing his mighty Works. Moreover,

tfy, The great Benefit and Usefulness of his Miracles to Mankind are sufficient to excite, not only Wonder, but the greatest Thankfulness. For his Miracles were all healing and medicinal, design'd either to give Life or restore it, to promote the Good of all Men, and to prevent the Hurt or Evil of any: and therefore we find, when two of his Disciples in a great Rage urg'd him to work a Miracle j in Calling for Fire from Heaven to consume the Samaritans, he gave them a sharp Rebuke, faying, Ye know not what Spirits Jif are of; for the Son of Man is come not to destroy Mens

Vol. IV. Part 2. Kk Lives, Lives, but tosave them. He went up and down still doing good to the Bodies and Souls of Men, and always exerted his Divine Power for the Welfare and Happiness of both. To all which if we add,

Lastly, The Extent of his Miracles, or that general Influence and Benefit that all Ages and Places have receiv'd by them ever since j we shall find abundant cause both to admire his Power, and to adore his Person.

And this will lead me to the Use and Application of this Discourse, which will be to confirm our Faith in our Blessed Saviour as the true Mefiias, and to persuade us all to receive his Doctrine, which stands confirm'd by so many Miracles. This Use we are the rather to make of it, because of the many late Attempts of some to shake our Faith or Belief of both. He must be a great stranger to the World, who does not see what great Endeavours are using to weaken the Credit of Christ's Doctrine and Miracles, and thereby to undermine the whole Christian Religion. How far these have prevail'd upon too many, whose bad Lives have made it their Interest and Wish that Christ's Doctrine should not be true, is easily apparent to any ordinary Observer. It is a vicious World we live in ^ and always the more Vice, the more Unbelief: which may make us think and fear, that we are not far from that time, of which Christ himself spake; When the Son of Man cotneth, stall he find Faith upon Earth? How far it hath fail'd of late years among us, and how much it is still sinking, is a Subject very sod to consider: so that instead of building Men up in their holy Faith, and carrying on the Work and Business of a Christian Life, we are forc'd to combat the Atheists and the Deists, who are still pecking at the Foundation. However, if these Mens Lusts would give them any time to consider, they must needs see such a Demonstration of the Spirit and Power in Christ's Doctrine and Miracles, as is sufficient to open the eyeS'of any, that do not wilfully shut them against the Truth, and to convince all that are not resolv'd against Conviction. PertinacU nullum dedit Remedium Deus, there is no Remedy for Obstinacy i and they must perish without redress, who persist in their Infidelity without Repentance. Let us then consider these things in time, that we be not carry'd away with the Error of the Wicked. Remember the heavy Doom denounc'd against Coraxjn and Bethsaida, for defcising the

Doctrine Doctrine and Miracles of Christ. The barbarous Nations of Tyre and Sidon, that never heard of a Saviour, {ball fare tetter at the Day of Judgment, than they who faw his mighty Works and believ'd not. And Capernaum, the place of Christ's Residence, where many of his Miracles were done, being thereby lifted up to Heaven in the height of their Privileges, will yet for their Unbelief and Impenitence be funk so much the deeper in Hell. Wherefore let us take heed lest there be in any of us an evil Heart of Unbelief, in departing from the living God; but rather let its hold sast the Profession of our Faith without wavering .- so mall we receive at last the End of our Faith, the Salvation of our Souls j which God grant, for the Merits of Jesus Christ, &c.

DISCOURSE LX.

The Epistle for the Five and Twentieth Sunday after Trinity.

Jer. xxiii. % 9.

Behold the Days come, faith the Lord, that J will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a Kjng shall reign and proffer, and shall execute Judgment and Justice in the Earth. Jn his days Judah shall he saved, and Israel shall dwell safer ly. And this is his Name whereby he shall be catTd, THE LORD OVR R1GHTE0VSNESS, &-c.:

THESE Word* containing both a Prophecy and a Promise of the Messias, are selected for the Epistle for this Day, and order'd by the Church to be always read upon the Sunday next before Advent, to preserve the Memory of his Coming, and to prepare for his Reception. Accordingly,

The Collect for the Day beseeches God to stir up the Hearts of bis saithful People, to be ready for him, that
