AUSTRALASIAN ENCYCLOPÆDIA. COMPRISING A DESCRIPTION OF ALL PLACES IN THE AUSTRALASIAN COLONIES, PRESENT DATE, AND THE BIOGRAPHIES OF BY GEORGE COLLINS LEVEY, = COMPANION OF ST. MICHAEL AND ST. GEORGE; COMMANDER OF THE CROWN OF ITALY; AUTHOR OF "HANDY GUIDES TO AUSTRALASIA AND THE RIVER PLATE," ETC. LONDON: HUTCHINSON & CO., 25, PATERNOSTER SQUARE. 1892. -RR$65.4. HARVARD COLLEGE JUL 5 1892 Printed by Hazell, Watson, & Viney, Ld., London and Aylesbury. No PREFACE. TO attempt has hitherto been made to afford knowledge about Australasia in a succinct form; and the student, politician, banker, merchant, or man of letters who desires to obtain information about the great Colonies in the Southern Seas has to consult a large number of works of reference, if indeed he can by any means obtain information about what he seeks. The articles in previous Cyclopædias were more or less incomplete, were out of date, and were not generally available. It is hoped that this volume will supply a want which has long been felt by all persons interested in, or identified with, Australasia. The compiler desires to express his obligations to the Agents-General, to the "Australian Handbook" of Gordon and Gotch, the various works of Blair, Henniker Heaton, Hayter, and Greville, and to the excellent library of the Royal Colonial Institute. |
