SIR, I PRESUME to lay before Your Royal Highness the Dictionary of Dr. Johnson; in which I have inserted additions, that sometimes, it is hoped, discover hidden treasures of our language, and sometimes add celebrity to our propagators of knowledge. That these additions might not have displeased the excellent author of the original work, may be inferred from the encouragement which he gave to labour of this description. That they may not be wholly unworthy the notice of Your Royal Highness, is expected from the benignity of your judgement. For Your Royal Highness, eminently ranking among those "princes who have thought it part of their honour to promote the improvement of their native DEDICATION. tongues," is too considerate to discourage even what may tend but in a small degree to illustrate the literature of England. With the highest sentiments of gratitude for the permission to inscribe the work to Your Royal Highness, and with all dutiful respect, I have the honour to be, May it please Your Royal Highness, Your most faithful and devoted Servant, May 29. 1818. HENRY JOHN TODD. |
