pense; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste. 39. See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no God with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand. For I lift up my hand to heaven, and say, I live forever. If I whet my glittering sword, and my hand take hold on judgment; I will render vengeance to mine enemies, and will reward them that hate me. I will make mine arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh; and that with the blood of the slain and of the captives from the beginning of revenges upon the enemy.

234. Is Vindicative Justice in God amiable?

Ex. 15. 6. Thy right hand, O Lord, hath dashed in pieces the enemy. And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee.

Dt. 32. 43. Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people; for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.

Ps. 58. 9. He shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath. The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance: he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.

Ps. 136. 1. O give thanks unto the Lord, for he is good: for his mercy endureth forever. 10. To him that smote Egypt in their first born: for his mercy endureth forever. And brought out Israel from among them: for his mercy endureth forever. [See the whole psalm]

Rev. 18. 20. Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her.

235. Is God zealous?

2 K. 19. 30. And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall yet again take root downward, and bear fruit upward. For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and they that escape out of mount Zion: the zeal of the Lord of hosts shall do this.

Is. 9. 7. Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Is. 59. 17. He put on righteousness as a breast-plate, and a helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

Ezk. 5. 13. Thus shall mine anger be accomplished, and I will cause my fury to rest upon them, and I will be comforted: and they shall know that I the Lord have spoken it in my zeal, when I have accomplished my fury in them.

Jn. 2. 15. And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; and said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence: make not my Father's house an house of merchandize. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

236. Has God a perfect plan of operations?

Dt. 32. 4. He is the Rock, his work is perfect. Ps. 104. 24. O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all.

Ps. 145. 10. All thy works shall praise thee, O Lord, and thy saints shall bless thee. They shall speak of the glory of thy kingdom, and talk of thy power.

Immutable, universal, particular, &c.

Ec. 3. 14. I know that whatsoever the Lord doeth it shall be forever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.

God's Purposes.

237. Are the purposes of God eternal and immutable? Job 23. 13. But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desireth, even that he doeth. Ps. 33. 11. The counsel of the Lord standeth forever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.

Pr. 19. 21. There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.

Is. 14. 24. The Lord of hosts hath sworn, saying, Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed so shall it stand. 27. For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back?

Is. 46. 9. I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.

238. Are the purposes of God universal and particular? Job. 14. 5. Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bo uns that he cannot pass.
