137. Judas repents, and destroys himself. THEN Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, saying, I have 4 sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. And he cast down the pieces of 5 2 Sam. silver in the temple, and departed, and went 17. 23. and hanged himself. And the chief priests took 6 the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. And they took counsel, and 7 bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. Wherefore that field was called, 8 Acts 1. The field of blood, unto this day. Then was 9 fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the Zech. 11. prophet, saying, And 2 they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; and gave them for the potter's field, as 10 the Lord appointed me.

AND the soldiers crucified him, and took his 35 garments, and made four parts, to every sol- J. 19.23 dier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout. They said therefore among themselves, 24 Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be that the scripture might be fulfilled, a Ps. 22.18. which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did. And 19 Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS. This 20 title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin. Then said the chief priests of the Jews 21 to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews. Pilate 22 answered, What I have written I have written. And it was the third hour, and they crucified M3. 15. him. And with him they crucify two 3 thieves; 25, 27 the one on his right hand, and the other on his

saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying,
Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the

we receive the due reward of our deeds: but

said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou 43 comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto

him, "Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou J. 19." be with me in paradise." Now there stood by 25 the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's

sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary 26 Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, "Woman, be27" hold thy son!" Then saith he to the disciple, "Behold thy mother!" And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for J. 19. 28 Elias. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture 'Ps. 69.21. 29 might be fulfilled, saith, "I thirst." Now there

AND, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; and the 52 graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, and came out of the 53 graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. Now when 54 the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and that Mk. 15. he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, they 39 feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son M". 27. of God. And all the people that came together 54 to that sight, beholding the things which were L. 23.48 done, smote their breasts, and returned.

And all his acquaintance, and the women, 49 stood afar off, beholding these things, among M". 27. which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the 56 mother of James and Joses, and the mother of 55 Zebedee's children, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: and many other Mk. 15. women which came up with him unto Jeru- 41 salem.

The Jews therefore, because it was the pre- J. 19. e Deut. 21. paration, that the bodies should not remain 31 upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away. Then came the soldiers, 32 and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they 33 came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs: but one of the 34
