I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long-suffering and doctrine. But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry.

215. Will God reward those who serve him?

Mat. 25. 21. Well done, thou good and faithful ser. vant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.

Jn. 12. 26. If any man serve me, him will my Father honor.

Ep. 6. 8. Whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord.

Ex. 22. 20. He that sacrificeth unto any God, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed.

Dt. 6. 14. Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you; (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you;) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

Dt. 8. 19. If thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day, that ye shall surely perish.

Dt. 27. 15. Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image, an abomination unto the Lord, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and putteth it in a secret place: and all the people shall answer and say, Amen.

Dt. 30. 17. But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish.

Lev. 19. 4. Turn ye not unto idols, nor make to yourselves molten gods: I am the Lord your God.

Ps. 81. 9. There shall no strange god be in thee; neither shalt thou worship any strange god.

Ps. 97. 7. Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols; worship him, all ye gods.

Jer. 44. 2. Ye have seen all the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, and upon all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are a desolation, and no man dwelleth therein; Because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke me to anger, in that they went to burn incense, and to serve other gods -Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets, rising early and sending them, saying, O, do not this abominable thing that I hate. Dt. 4. 15—19, 23, 24. 1 K. 9. 6.

Love to God.

277. Are we required to love God?

Dt. 6. 5. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. Dt. 11. 1. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, always.

Dt. 30. 15. See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; In that I commanded thee this day to love the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments.

Jos. 22. 5. Take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the Lord charged you, to love the Lord your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul.

Pr. 23. 26. My son, give me thine heart.

Mat. 22. 37. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. Mk. 12. 30. and Lk. 10. 27.

1 Cor. 16. 22. If any man love not the Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema, maran-atha.

Jude 21. Keep yourselves in the love of God.

278. Why should we love God?

Ps. 95. 3. The Lord is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

Ps. 99. 9. Exalt the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy.

Ps. 107. 8. O that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men!

Ps. 148. 13. Let them praise the name of the Lord: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heavens.

Love to God.

279. What promises are made to those who love God? Ex. 20. 6. And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Dt. 7. 9. Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations. Neh. 1. 5.

Dt. 11. 13. And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart, and with all your soul, That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. And I will send grass in thy fields for thy cattle, that thou mayest eat and be full.

Neh. 1. 5. The great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments.

Ps. 145. 20. The Lord preserveth all them that love him: but all the wicked will he destroy.

Pr. 8. 17. I love them that love me: and those that seek me early shall find me.

Jn. 14. 21. He that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Rom. 8. 28. And we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

1 Cor. 2. 9. As it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Jam. 1. 12. Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the lord hath promised to them that love him.

Jam. 2. 5. Heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him.

Spurious love-Fear of God.

281. Does God require us to fear him?

Dt. 10. 12. And now, Israel, what doth the Lord thy God require of thee, but to fear the Lord thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul. 20. Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave.

Jos. 24. 14. Now therefore, fear the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in truth.

Ps. 33. 8. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.

Ps. 89. 7. God is greatly to be feared in the assembly of the saints, and to be had in reverence of all them that are about him.

Pr. 23. 17. Be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long.

Ec. 12. 13. Fear God and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Is. 8. 13. Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

Lk. 12. 5. I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which, after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
