greatness, in the length of his branches: for his root was by great waters. 6 The cedars in the garden of God could not hide him: the fir-trees were notlike hisboughs, and the chestnut-trees were not like his branches; nor any tree in the garden of God was like unto him in his beauty. 7 I have made him fair by the multitude of his branches: so that all the trees of Eden, that were in the garden of God, envied him. * 8. Therefore thus saith the Lord God; Because thou hast lifted up thyself in height, and he hath shot up his top among the thick boughs, and his heart is lifted up in his height; 9 I have therefore delivered him into the hand of the mighty one of the heathen; he shall surely deal with him : I have driven him out for his wickedneSS. 10 And strangers, the terrible of the nations, have cut him off, and have left him : upon the mountains and in all the valleys his branches are fallen, and his boughs are broken by all the rivers of the land; and all the people of the earth are gone down from his shadow, and have left him. ll. Upon his ruin shall all the fowls of the heaven remain, and all the beasts of the field shall be upon his branches: 12 To the end that none of all the trees by the waters exalt themselves for their height, neither shoot up their top among the thick boughs, neither their
trees stand up in their height, all that drink water: for they are all delivered unto death, to the nether parts of the earth. 13 Thus saith the Lord God; In the day when he went down to the gravel caused amourning. I covered the deep for him, and I restrained the floods thereof, and the great waters were stayed: and I caused Lebanon to mourn for him, and all the trees of the field fainted for him. 14 I made the nations to shake at the sound of his fall, when I cast him down to hell with them that descend into the pit : and all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, shall be comforted in the nether parts of the earth. 15 They also went down into hell with him, unto them that be slain with the sword: and they that were his arm, that dwelt under his shadow in the midst of the heathen.
Lament of the Babylonish Captivity.
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down; yea, we wept when we remembered Zion. 2 We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. 3 For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. 4 How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land 2 5 If I forget thee, O Jeru
salem, let my right hand forget her cunning. 6 If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy.
Return from the Babylonish Captivity. THE word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying, * 2 Thus speaketh the Lord God of Israel, saying, Write thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee in a book. 3 For, lo, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the Lord: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it. *| 4 And these are the words that the Lord spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah. 5 For thus saith the Lord ; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace. 6 Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it. 7 For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him: 8 But they shall serve the Lord their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them. * 9. Therefore fear thou not,
O my servant Jacob, saith the Lord; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shallmake him afraid. 10 For I am with thee, saith the Lord, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet will I not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished. ll For thus saith the Lord, Thy bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous. 12 There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up; thou hast no healing medicines. 13 All thy lovers have forgotten thee: they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased. 14 Why criest thou for thine affliction ? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee. 15 Therefore all they that devour thee shall be devoured; and all thine adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity; and they that spoil thee shall be a spoil, and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey. 16 For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the Lord; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after. * 17 Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacob's tents, and have mercy on his dwellingplaces; and the city shall be builded upon her own heap, and the palace shall remain after the manner thereof. 18 And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few ; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small. 19 Their children also shall be as afore-time, and their congregation shall be established before me, and I will punish all that oppress them. 20 And their nobles shall be ofthemselves, and theirgovernor shall proceed from the midst of them ; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me f saith the Lord. 21 And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. *I22 Behold, the whirlwind of the Lord goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked. 23 The fierce anger of the Lord shall not return, until he have done it, and until he have performed the intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it.
At the same time, saith the Lord, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people. 2 Thus saith the Lord; The people which were left of the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest. 3 The Lord hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee. 4 Again I will build thee, and thou shalt be built, O virgin of Israel: thou shalt again be adorned with thy tabrets, and shalt go forth in the dances of them that make merry. 5 Thou shalt yet plant vines upon the mountains of Samaria: the planters shallplant, and shall eat them as common things. 6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen upon the mount Ephraim shall cry, Arise ye, and let us go up to Zion unto the Lord our God. 7 For thus saith the Lord; Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout among the chief of the nations: publish ye, praise ye, and say, O Lord, save thy people, the remnant of Israel. 8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the coasts of the earth, and with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her that travalleth with child together: a great company shall return thither.
9 They shallcome with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them : I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first-born.
* 10 Hear the word of the Lord, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off; and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.
11 For the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and ransomed him from the hand of him that was stronger than he.
12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil, and for the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.
13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together: for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their SOrrow.
14 And I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, saith the Lord.
15 Thus saith the Lord;
A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rachel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they Were not.
16 Thus saith the Lord; Refrain thy voice from weeping, and thine eyes from tears: for thy work shall be rewarded, saith the Lord; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy. 17 And there is hope in thine end, saith the Lord, that thy children shall come again to their own border. * 18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus; Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a bullock unaccustomed to the yoke : turn thou me, and I shall be turned ; for thou art the Lord my God. 19 Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a pleasant child? for since I spake against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my bowels are troubled for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith the Lord. 20 Set thee up way-marks, make thee high heaps: set thine heart toward the high-way, even the way whichthou wentest:turn again, O virgin of Israel, turn again to these thy cities.
SAY unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went.
2 And I will sanctify my great name, which was profamed among the heathen, which ye have profaned in the midst of them; and the heathen shall
know that I am the Lord, saith the Lord God, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes. 3 For I will take you from among the heathen, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. *|4 Then will Isprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. 5. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 6 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgements, and do them. 7 And ye shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and ye shall be my people, and I will be your God. 8 I will also save you from all your uncleannesses; and I will call for the corn, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you. 9 And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that ye shall receive no more reproach of famine among the heathen. 10 Then shall ye remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations. ll. Not for your sakes do I
this, saith the Lord God, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel. ‘s 12 Thus saith the Lord God; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the wastes shall be builded. 13 And the desolate land shall be tilled, whereas it lay desolate in the sight of all that assed by. 14 And they shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are become fenced, and are inhabited. 15 Then the heathen that are left round about you shall know that I the Lord build the ruined places, and plant that that was desolate: I the Lord have spoken it, and I will do it. * 16 Thus saith the Lord God, When I shall have gathered the house of Israel from the people among whom they are scattered, and shall be sanctified in the sight of the heathen, then shall they dwell in their land that I have given to my servant Jacob. 17 And they shall dwell in safety therein, and shall build houses and plant vineyards; yea, they shall dwell with confidence when I have executed judgements upon all them that despise them round about them; and they shall know that I am the Lord their God.
