And it

the sabbath from doing thy pleasure on my holy day, and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable, and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words; then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord, &c. Is. lviii. 13, 14. 66 They" ("the Pharisees") watched "him" ("Jesus") whether he would heal him on the sabbathday, that they might accuse him. And he saith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth. And he said unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the sabbath-days, or to do evil? To save life or to kill? But they held their peace. And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he saith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored whole as the other. Mar. iii. 2-5. came to pass also on another sabbath (the same as the foregoing), that he entered into the synagogue, and taught, and there was a man whose right hand was withered, and the Scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath-day, that they might find an accusation against him. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose, and stood forth. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing, Is it lawful on the sabbath-days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so; and his hand was restored whole as the other. Lu. vi. 6-11. And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the sabbath; and behold, there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw her, he called her to him, and said unto her, Woman, thou art loosed from thine infirmity. And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. And the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because that Jesus had healed on the sabbath-day, and said unto the people, There are six days in which men ought to work, in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath-day. Lord then answered him and said, Thou hypocrite, doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox, or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? and ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath-day? Lu. xiii. 10-16. And

The

they (the women which came with Jesus from Galilee) returned (from the sepulchre), and prepared spices and ointment; and rested the sabbath-day according to the commandment. Lu. xxiii. 56. Immediately (at the words, rise, take up thy bed and walk) the man (who was impotent at the pool Bethesda) was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked, and on the same day was the sabbath. The Jews therefore said to him that was cured, It is the sabbath-day; it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed and walk. And there fore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath-day. But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. John v. 9—11. 16, 17. I have done one work, and ye all marvel (said Jesus to the Jews), Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision (not because it is of Moses, but of the fathers,) and ye on the sabbath-day circumcise a man. If a man on the sabbath-day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken, are ye angry at me because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath-day? Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. John vii. 21-24. And it was the sabbathday when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes (the man born blind, who was ordered to wash in the pool of Siloam). Then again the Pharisees also asked him (the man bers blind) how he had received his sight? He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see. Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath-day. John ix. 14-16.

3 Have ye not read, &c.] See verse 5. Have ye not read, That he which made them at the beginning made them male and female! Mat. xix. 4. Have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast per fected praise? All things whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive. Verily I say unto you, that the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God be fore you (the priests and elders). Mat. xxi. 16. 22. 31. Have ye not read this scripture, The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner? And as touching the dead, that they rise, have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. Mar. xii. 10. 26, 27. Have ye not read so much as this, what David did when himself was an hungred, and they

that were with him; How he entered into the house of God, and 4 did eat the shew-bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests? Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath-days the 5 priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the 6

which were with him, &c. Lu. vi. 3. What shall I do to inherit eternal life (said a lawyer to Jesus)? He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? &c. Lu. x. 25, 26.

What David did.] What is under thine hand (said David to Ahimelech the priest)? Give me five loaves of bread in mine hand, or what there is present. And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread. And David answered the priest, and said unto him, The bread is in a manner common. So the priest gave him hallowed bread; for there was no bread there but the shew-bread, that was taken from before the Lord, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away. 1 Sa. xxi. 3-6. Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he and they that were with him? how he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shew-bread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him? 25, 26.

Mar. ii.

4 The shew-bread.] Thou shalt set upon the table the shew-bread before me alway. Er. xxv. 30. Thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof; two tenth-deals shall be in one cake. And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the Lord. And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the Lord. Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the Lord continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant. And it shall be Aaron's and his sons'; and they shall eat it in the holy place; for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the Lord, made by fire, by a perpetual statute. Le. xxiv. 59.

But only for the priests. ] See preced. com. Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. And they shall eat those things wherewith the atonement was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them. But a stranger shall not eat thereof, because they are holy. Ex. xxix. 32, 33. Moses said unto Aaron, and to his sons, Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation; and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of con

secrations, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it. Le. viii. 31.

5 On the sabbath-days the priests in the temple.] On the sabbath-day (thou shalt offer) two lambs of the first year, without spot, and two tenth-deals of flour, for a meat offering, mingled with oil and the drink-offering thereof. This is the burnt-offering and his drink-offering. Nu. xxviii. 9, 10. Moses gave unto you circumcision, and ye on the sabbath-day circumcise a man; if a man on the sabbath-day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken, are ye angry at me (said Jesus) because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath-day? John vii. 22, 23.

Profane the sabbath, &c.] Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath-day? Ne. xiii. 17. Speak unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord God, I will profane my sanctuary, the excellency of your strength, the desire of your eyes, and that which your soul pitieth; and your sons, and your daughters, whom ye have left, shall fall by the sword. Ez. xxiv. 21.

6 That in this place is one, &c.] See verses 41, 42. Ye fools, and blind (said Jesus to the Pharisees), for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? And whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty. Ye fools, and blind; for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it and by all things thereon; and whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein. Mat. xxiii. 17-21. But will God in very deed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house which I (Solomon) have built! 2 Chr. vi. 18. I will fill this house with glory, saith the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine; the glory of this latter house (the second temple) shall be greater than the former; and in this place will I give peace, saith the Lord of hosts. Hag. ii. 7, 8, 9. The Lord whom ye seek shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in. Behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. Mal. iii. 1. What sign shewest thou unto us (said the Jews to Jesus), seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered,

7 temple. But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guilt8 less. For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath-day. 9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:

and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up. Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days? But he spake of the temple of his body. John ii. 18-21. And (we who are made nigh by the blood of Christ) are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone. In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God, through the Spirit. Ep. ii. 20, 21, 22. For in him (Christ) dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Col. ii. 9. To whom coming as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God and precious, ye also, as lively stones, are built up, a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 1 Pe. ii. 4, 5.

7 If ye had known what this meaneth, &c.] See chap. ix. 13. Ye do err (said Jesus), not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God. Mat. xxii. 29. They that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets, which are read every sabbath-day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him. Ac. xiii. 27.

I will have mercy and not sacrifice.] See chap. ix. 13. To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? saith the Lord. I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and fat of fed beasts, and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats. When ye come to appear before me, who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts? Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination unto me; the new moons and sabbaths, the calling of assemblies, I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting. Your new-moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth: they are a trouble unto me; I am weary to bear them. And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you; yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood. Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. Is. i. 11—17.

Condemned the guiltless.] Also against his (Job's) three friends was his (Elihu's) wrath kindled, because they had found no answer, and yet had condemned Job. Job xxxii. 3.

They (the wicked) gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood. Ps. xciv. 21. He (the Lord) shall stand at the right hand of the poor, to save him from those that condemn his soul. Ps. cix. 31. He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord. Pr. xvii. 15. Ye have condemned and killed the just, and he doth not resist you. Ja. v. 6.

8 The Son of man, &c.] See chap. ix. 6. The Son of man is lord also of the sabbath. Mar. ii. 28. And there appeared unto them (in the mount of transfiguration) Elias, with Moses; and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter answered and said to Je sus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias; for he wist not what to say, for they were sore afraid. And there was a cloud that over shadowed them; and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him. Mar. ix. 4-7. The Son of man is lord also of the sabbath. Lu. vi. 5. My Father worketh hitherto, and I work (said Jesus). Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God, Then answered Jesus, and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. John v. 17-20. To them that are without law I became (said Paul) as without law, (being not without law to God, but under the law to Christ,) that I might gain them that are without law. 1 Co. ix. 21. Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God has prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come. 1 Co. xvi. 2. I was in the spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as a trumpet, saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last. Re. i. 10.

9 He went into their synagogue.] And he entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there which had a withered hand, &c. Mar. iii. 1, &c. And it came to pass on another sabbath (the same as the foregoing), that he entered into the synagogue and taught, and there was a man whose right hand was withered, &c. Lu. vi. 6, &c.

Lu. xi. 54. shall be utterly darkened. Zec. xi. 17. In And they began to accuse him, saying, We these (five porches of the pool of Bethesda) lay found this fellow perverting the nation, and a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, forbidding to give tribute to Cæsar, saying halt, withered, waiting for the moving of the that he himself is Christ, a king. Ye have water. John v. 3. brought this man to me (said Pilate) as one that perverteth the people; and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him. Lu. xxiii. 2. 14. This they said to him (respecting the stoning of the woman taken in adultery), tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. John viii. 6.

Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-days?] The Pharisees came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? Mat. xix. 3. Tell us therefore (said the Jews to Jesus), what thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute to Cæsar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Mat. xxii. 17, 18. There are six days (said the ruler of the synagogue to the people) in which men ought to work; in them therefore come and be healed, and not on the sabbath-day. Lu. xiii. 14. And Jesus spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath-day? And they held their peace: arad he took "him" ("the man which had the dopsy") and healed him, and let him go, and answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ox or an ass fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath-day? And they could not answer him again to these things. Lu. xiv. 3-6. Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cæsar, or no? Lu. xx. 22. The Jews said unto "him" ("the impotent man") that was cured, It is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. John v. 10. This man is not of God (said some of the Pharisees), because he keepeth not the sabbath-day. John ix. 16.

VOL. II.

11 What man shall there be among you, &c.] Thou hypocrite (said Jesus to the ruler of the synagogue), doth not each one of you on the sabbath loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and lead him away to watering? and ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath-day? And when he had said these things, all his adversaries were ashamed, and all the people rejoiced for all the glorious things that were done by him. Lu. xiii. 15, 16, 17. Which of you shall have an ass, or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath-day? Lu. xiv. 5. See chap. xviii. 12.

And if it fall into a pit, &c.] If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help him.

12 it out? How much then is a man better than a sheep? Where13 fore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath-days. Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; 14 and it was restored whole, like as the other. Then the Pharisees

went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy 15 him. But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: 16 and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; And 17 charged them that they should not make him known: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet,

xxiii. 4, 5. Thou shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fall down by the way, and hide thyself from them, thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again. De. xxii. 4.

12 A man better than a sheep.] See chap. vi. 26. How much more are ye better than the fowls? Lu. xii. 24.

It is lawful to do well on the sabbath-days.] Is it lawful (said Jesus) to do good on the sabbath-days, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy? But they (the Jews) held their peace. Mar. iii. 4. I will ask you one thing (said Jesus), Is it lawful on the sabbath-days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? Lu. vi. 9.

13 And it was restored whole, &c.] And he laid his hands on her (the woman that was bowed together), and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God. Lu. xiii. 13. And he (Peter) took "him" ("the lame man," who sat at the gate of the temple) by the right hand, and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ancle bones received strength. And he, leaping up, stood, and walked, and entered with them into the temple, walking, and leaping, and praising God. Ac. iii. 7, 8.

14 Went out.] When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. Mat. xxvii. 1. The Pharisees went forth, and straightway took counsel with the Herodians against him, how they might destroy him. Mar. iii. 6. And they (the Scribes and Pharisees) were filled with madness, and communed one with another, what they might do to Jesus. Lu, vi. 11. Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he had not only broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. John v. 18. Therefore they sought again to take him, but he escaped out of their hand. John x. 39. Then from that day forth (when Caiaphas prophesied of Jesus) they took counsel together for to put him to death. Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. John xi. 53. 57. 15 He withdrew himself, &c.] See chap. X. 23. And it came to pass in those days, that be went out into a mountain to pray, and

continued all night in prayer to God. Lu. vi. 12.

And great multitudes followed him.] See chap. iv. 24, 25. A great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him (Jesus), and he spake to his disciples, that a small ship should wait on him, because of the multitude, lest they should throng him; for he had healed many, inso much that they pressed upon him for to touch him; as many as had plagues, and unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying, Thou art the Son of God. And he straitly charged them that they should not make him known. Mar. iii. 8-12. And whithersoever he entered into villages, or cities, or countries, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment; and as many as touched him were made whole. 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken.] See chap. i. 22; viii. 17. Bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob; let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen; let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come. Shew the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are gods; yea, do good, or do evil, that we may be dismayed, and behold it altogether. Is. xli. 22, 23. Behold, the former things are come to pass, and new things do I declare: before they spring forth I tell you of them. Is. xlii. 9. I am the Lord that
