Keeping the heart.-Heaven a place.

Jer. 29. 13. Ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Ezk. 33. 31. With their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness.

Mat. 15. 7. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me,

Mat. 22. 37. Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart.

Jn. 4. 24. God is a spirit: and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Ac. 8. 21. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter: for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 37. If thou believest with all thy heart, thou mayest.

Rom. 2. 28. He is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God. Rom. 10. 10. With the heart, man believeth unto righteousness.

1 Tim. 1. 5. Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart, and of a good couscience, and of faith unfeigned.

318. Are we required to keep the heart?

Pr. 4. 23. Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Heaven.

319. Is heaven a place, or only a state of being?

Jn 14. 2. In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am, there ye may be also.

Purity of heaven-Rest of heaven—A place of happiness.

Heb. 11. 16. But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly.

320. Is heaven a place of universal purity ?

Ps. 17. 15. As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Mat. 6. 20. Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt.

2 Pet. 3. 13. We, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth right

eousness.

1 Jn. 3. 2. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

Rev. 21. 2. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 27. And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie.

321. Is heaven a place of rest?

2 Th. 1. 6. It is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you; And to you, who are troubled, rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed.

Heb. 4. 9. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God..

Rev. 14. 13. Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors.

322. Is heaven a place of unalloyed, ineffable happi

ness?

Ps. 16. 11. In thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures forever more.

Honors and glory of heaven.

Ps. 17. 15. As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake with thy likeness.

Is. 51. 11. Everlasting joy shall be upon their head: they shall obtain gladness and joy; and sorrow and mourning shall flee away.

1 Cor. 2. 9. Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.

Rev. 7. 15. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

Rev. 21. 3. Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain. 7. He that overcometh shall inherit all things.

323. Will Christ bestow any special honor and glory upon his followers?

Mat. 13. 43. Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father.

Jn. 17. 22. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one; I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also whom thou hast given me be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory.

Hell a place of fire.-Holy Spirit a distinct person. Rom. 8. 17. If children, then heirs: heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I reckon, that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 32. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things.

1 Cor. 3. 21. All things are yours; Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world: or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; And ye are Christ's: and Christ is God's.

2 Cor. 4. 17. Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.

Hell.

324. Is hell a place of punishment?

Is. 30. 33. Tophet is ordained of old; yea, for the king it is prepared: he hath made it deep and large: the pile thereof is fire and much wood; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of brimstone, doth kindle it.

Lk. 16. 24. I am tormented in this flame.

2 Th. 1. 8. In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel. [See Punishment of the wicked, 532-550.]

Holy Spirit.

325. Is the Holy Spirit a distinct and divine Person?

Mat. 28. 19. Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

Lk. 3. 22. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him.

I Cor. 12. 3. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God, calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.

2 Cor. 13. 14. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all.

1 Jn. 5. 7. There are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost; and these three are one. [See 208, and 537 ]

326. What is the office-work of the Holy Spirit?

Is. 59. 19. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against

him.

Lk. 1. 67. Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied.

Lk. 12. 11. Take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say: For the Holy Ghost shall teach you in the same hour what ye ought to say.

Jn. 3. 5. Except a man be born of water, and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit, is spirit.

Jn. 16. 7. If I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: When he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth.
