1. As our Lord was leaving the temple did any of his disciples address him? A. Matt. xxiv. 2 to 4.-v. 1 to 3. 2. As he sat upon the Mount of Olives, what question was he asked? A. Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately, Tell us when these things shall be, and what shall be the sign, when all these things shall be fulfilled. That the Father had retained to himself the knowledge of the precise time when these awful scenes would take place; no angel or man was acquainted with it, and it was one of those things of which the Son in his human capacity was ignorant, and was not permitted to reveal to mankind. The knowledge of our blessed Lord, as man, was not infinite. Luke ii. 52,-v. 32. 8. What advice does our Lord give his disciples? A. Matt. xxiv. 69, 70.-v. 33.

9. To whom does our Lord liken the Son of man? A. To a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.—v. 34.

10. What does he mean by this? A. That his disciples were placed in the same state of responsibility as to the

discharge of their duty, lest they may be called away when unprepared, as servants who had been intrusted by their master with the charge of their fellow servants, and were in momentary expectation of his return.

11. What does he tell his disciples to do? A. Watch ye therefore, for ye know not when the Master of the house cometh, at even or at midnight, or at the cock crowing, or in the morning, lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.— v. 35, 36.

12. What particular hours of the night are here meant ? A. Matt. xxiv. 71, 72.

13. Does our Lord mean to confine this injunction of watching to his own particular disciples, whom he then addressed? A. No; he says, what I say unto you, I say unto all, Watch; we must ail be ever in a state of preparation for the coming of our Lord; we know not how soon we may be called away.-v. 37.

CHAPTER XIV.

1. How many days after this was the feast of the over? A. Two.-v. 1.

3. Did the men who came to take our Lord attempt to seize on any other person? A. Yes; there followed our Lord a certain young man having a linen cloth cast about his naked body, and the young men laid hold on him, and he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked.—v. 51, 52.

4. Why is this circumstance recorded by St. Mark? A. To show the extreme danger of appearing to be connected with our Lord at this time, of which the young man seemed to be perfectly aware, and also to show how wonderfully the disciples were preserved from danger, being reserved for other purposes.

5. What did they do with our Blessed Lord? 4. Matt. xxvi. 114 to 121 inclusive, 158.-v. 53 to 57.

6. Why did they bring the charge concerning the destroying the temple against him? A. Because they knew that the people were particularly attached to their temple, and would most probably be greatly incensed at any thing being said which they imagined to be disrespectful to it.

7. Did these witnesses agree together? A. No; St. Matthew and St. Mark point out a most remarkable difference in what they said. The former states that the witnesses charged our Lord with saying, I am able to destroy this temple, &c. Matt. xxvi. v. 61, while St. Mark tells us that the witnesses accused him, saying, I will destroy, &c. These variations in their evidence were sufficient to show the falsehood and malicious perversion of their accusation.-v. 58, 59.

12. Why did Pilate, who before had seemed so anxious about the release of our Lord, now seem so apprehensive lest he might be taken down before he was quite dead? A. He was fearful if he had appeared at all disposed to rescue him from death, after the charges which had been brought against him, that a complaint would have been lodged with Tiberius Cæsar the Roman emperor, who was of a remarkably jealous and suspicious character. His extreme caution however, through Divine Providence, was attended with the best effects, as it established the fact of our Lord being really dead, and thus made his resurrection appear more manifestly the effect of divine agency.

CHAPTER XVI.
