3. (a) At what period were the Netherlanders leaders in Musical Art.

(b) What branch in particular was cultivated by by them?

(c) Give names of several eminent Netherland musicians of that period.

4. Write a short account of Hayden, date and place of birth and death, his position in Musical History, names of his more important works in different departments, for church, orchestra, chamber music, etc.

5. (a) What of the pianoforte? When and where did it first appear?

(b) Whose name is associated with its invention? (c) Give names and description of its precursors.

7. Write concerning Henry Purcell.

8. Give names of as many English musicians as you can, prior to 1750. State in what branch each excelled.

10. Give names, chronologically of twelve operatic composers born prior to 1800, Italian, German and French. State which of them have been preeminent in their influence on the opera as an art work.

1. Harmonize the following Bass in six parts-2 Sopranos, Alto, Tenor, 2 Basses in open score:

2. Harmonize the following choral melody for six voicesSoprano, 2 Altos, 2 Tenors and Bass:

3. Write a period of sixteen measures, in D major, time, modulating at the eighth measure to A flat major, with full cadence. Pass transitionally through G minor, F minor and D flat major. Modulate back to D, with full cadence, passing through C sharp minor, B major and E minor. Employ suspensions single, double and triple (9th, 11th and 13th chords), passing

tones and other devices.

4. Write an accompaniment to this melody as a piece for the piano. Maintain some motival figure throughout.

5. Write the harmonic skeleton or basis in four parts of the prelude in C minor-No. 2, Book I., of Bach's "Well-tempered Clavichord."
