And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God,

And fell down on his face at his feet, giving him thanks: and he was a Samaritan.

And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?

There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.

And he said unto him, Arise, go thy way: thy faith hath made thee whole.

Christ teacheth the true nature of Prayer.

LUKE Xviii. 1–9.

And he spake a parable unto them to this end, Luke xviii. 1. that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;

Saying, There was in a city a judge, which Luke xviii. 2. feared not God, neither regarded man:

And there was a widow in that city; and she Luke xviii. 3. came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adver

sary.

And he would not for a while: but afterward he Luke xviii. 4. said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man ;

Yet, because this widow troubleth me, I will Luke xviii. 5. avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary

me.

And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge Luke xviii. 6. saith.

And shall not God avenge his own elect, which Luke xviii. 7. cry day and night unto him, though he bear long

with them?

I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. On a tour. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?

SECTION XXXVIII.

Parable of the Publican and Pharisee.

LUKE Xviii. 9-15.

And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and despised others:

Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with him-
self: God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men
are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this
Publican.

I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that
I possess.

And the Publican, standing afar off, would not
lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote
upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a
sinner.

*Or, as being righteous.

I tell you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that f Matt. xxiii. exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that hum- 12. bleth himself shall be exalted.

The event related in it is placed here by Lightfoot, who follows the order of St. Luke; and by Newcome also, who makes the conversation on divorce, and the blessing the children, immediately to precede it.
