Reproof to be regarded.-Riches corrupting. 572. Ought just reproof to be kindly received and regarded ?

Pr. 6. 23. Reproofs of instruction are the way of life.

Pr. 10. 17. He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.

Pr. 12. 1. Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.

Pr. 13. 13. Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honored.

Pr. 15.5. A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent. 10. Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die. 31. The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise. He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: but he that heareth reproof getteth understanding.

Pr. 29. 1. He that, being ofien reproved, hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely; riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt. Jer. 22. 21. I spake unto thee in thy prosperity; but

Ezk. 16. 49. Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom, pride, fullness of bread, and abundance of idleness was in her and in her daughters, neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy. And they were haughty, and committed abomination before me: therefore I took them away as I saw good.

Ezk. 28. 5. By thy great wisdom and by thy traffic, hast thou increased thy riches, and thy heart is lifted up because of thy riches.

Mk. 4. 19. And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

But they that will be rich, fall into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction, and perdition. 574. Are worldly possessions and honors vain and transitory?

Pr. 23. 4. Labor not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

Éc. 1. 2. Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. 14. I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

Ec. 2. 4. I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards: I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits: I made me pools of water, to water thereRiches, conformity to the world, ornaments, &c. with the wood that bringeth forth trees: I got ine servants and maidens, and had servants born in

house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me; I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings, and of the provinces: I gat me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts. So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them, I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced in all my labor: and this was my portion of all my labor. Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do: and behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. Therefore I hated life; because the work that is wrought under the sun is grievous unto me: for all is vanity and vexation of spirit. Yea, I hated all my labor which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me. And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

575. Are the hoarding of riches, conformity to the world, and wearing ornaments forbidden ?

Pr. 28. 20. A faithful man shall abound with blessings: but he that maketh haste to be rich shall not be innocent. 22. He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him.

Is. 5. 8. Wo unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no place, that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth! Mat. 6. 19. Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon

Riches, conformity to the world, ornaments, &c. earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for

yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your

Mat. 19. 23. Verily, I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the

So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God. 33. Sell that ye have, and give alms: provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
