PLUNGED in a gulf of dark despair,
We wretched sinners lay;
Without one cheerful beam of hope,
Or spark of glimmering day.

With pitying eye, the Prince of peace,
Beheld our helpless grief;

He saw, and (O! amazing love!)
He came to our relief.

Down from the shining seats above,
With joyful haste he fled;
Entered the grave in mortal flesh,
And dwelt among the dead.

O for this love let rocks and hills
Their lasting silence break;
And all harmonious human tongues
The Saviour's praises speak.

Angels, assist our mighty joy,
Strike all your harps of gold;
But when you raise your highest notes,
His love can ne'er be told.

IMMERSION INTO CHRIST.

8's & 7's.

JESUS, mighty King of Zion,
Thou alone our guide shalt be;

Thy commission we rely on,
We would fully follow thee.

As an emblem of thy passion,
And thy victory o'er the grave;
We, accepting thy salvation,

Are baptized beneath the wave.
Fearless of the world's despising,
We the ancient path pursue;
Buried with our Lord, and rising
To a life divinely new.

THE great Redeemer thus was plunged
In Jordan's passing flood,
Foreshowing he would soon be whelmed
In sorrows, tears, and blood.

His sacred body thus was laid
Beneath the yielding wave;

And, with heaven's high approval, raised
Out of the liquid grave.

Lord! we thy word of grace obey,

And in thy footsteps tread; Believe, are buried, rise with thee, To live to Christ our head.

MEEKLY at Jordan's profluent stream,
Th' immersed Redeemer bowed;

Bright did the heav'nly glory flame,
That hushed the wondering crowd.
"This is my Son, -the Well-beloved,"
Proclaimed the Father's voice.

O sinners, hear the saving word!

And make this Christ your choice.

8's, 7's, & 4's.

GOD of our salvation, hear us:

Bless these youthful converts so,
That in Jesus, always near us,

They may strong and fruitful grow.
Saviour keep them—

Guard them all from every foe.

May they live in view of heaven,
Where they hope to see thy face;
Save them from unhallowed leaven-
All that might obstruct thy grace:
Keep them walking

Each in his appointed place.

As their steps draw near and nearer
To the place they call their home;
May their views of heaven grow clearer—
Hopes more bright of joys to come:
And when dying,

May thy presence cheer the gloom.

HOSANNA to the Church's head!

Who, standing in our room and stead, First was immersed in Jordan's flood, Next whelmed in death, unspared by God.

We, as the ransomed of the Lord,
Have each obeyed his sacred word;
And through a grateful life would show
What to redeeming love we owe. »

PROCLAIM, says Christ, my wondrous

grace

To all the sons of men:

He that believes, and is immersed,
Salvation shall obtain.

Let plenteous grace descend on those,
Who, hoping in his word,
This day have publicly declared,
That Jesus is their Lord.

With cheerful feet may they advance,
And run the Christian race;
And through the troubles of the way,
Find all-sufficient grace.

SALVATION IN CHRIST ALONE.

BEHOLD, salvation in the Lord,
For wretched, dying men;
The Saviour's love has writ the word,
With mercy's blood-dipped pen.

His word of gospel grace is strong,

As that which built the skies:
The voice which rolled the stars along,
Spake all the promises.

He said, "Let the wide heaven be spread!"
And heaven was stretched abroad:

"Abram, I'll be thy God," he said; And he was Abram's God.

Thy promise, Lord, supports our hope;
Thy love our love constrains;
Thy bounties call obedience up;
Thy life all life maintains.
101. 4-6's. & 2-8's.
JESUS, transporting sound!

The joy of earth and heaven;
No other help is found,
No other name is given,
By which we can salvation have:
He only died the lost to save.

Though pierced by death's dread sting,
My poor expiring soul,

Hearing, looked up to Him

And was at once made whole;

Beholding him who on the tree,
Loved, suffered, bled, and died for me!

O for a trumpet-voice!
On all the world to call;
To bid each heart rejoice,
In him who died for all.

For sinners he was crucified;

66

For every man" the Saviour died.

SAVIOUR divine, we know thy name,
And in thy name we trust!

Thou art "the Lord our righteousness;"
Thou art thine Israel's boast.

We put thee on; a glorious robe!
That covers all around;
