PREFACE.

THE New Edition of this Guide Book is issued with the fullest confidence, that (like the former Editions) it will be found acceptable to Candidates about to undergo the Board of Trade Examinations. It is now well-known at those Examinations the strictest accuracy is required in all the calculations; it is, therefore, all the more necessary that each candidate should, by continued and extended practice, endeavour to make himself what is termed an accurate worker.

Having this in view, the author has introduced a large number of examples of each problem, including the various styles in which it is likely they may be given by the Examiner.

The Elements from the Nautical Almanac for 1885, and from the Admiralty Tide Tables for 1884, will be found useful to candidates who have not those useful publications at hand when practising while at sea.
